Chapter 10 - Darkness and Decoy

Sparks rained down from the ceiling like a shower of falling stars, casting chaotic, flickering shadows across the vast warehouse floor. In the pitch blackness, shouts of confusion erupted from the tactical squad as their night-vision goggles overloaded from the sudden electrical surge.
"Grab the bag, Julian!" Arthur’s voice cut sharply through the pandemonium from somewhere near the industrial machine.
Julian dropped to his knees, his hands frantically sweeping across the dusty concrete until his fingers brushed against the canvas fabric of his black backpack. He grabbed it just as a heavy combat boot slammed down inches from his hand, missing him by a hair.
"Target is moving toward Sector Four!" a digitized voice barked over a tactical radio in the gloom.
Suddenly, a heavy hand gripped Julian’s shoulder, pulling him backward into the narrow crawlspace behind the massive industrial machine. Julian swung his elbow defensively, but a familiar hand caught his wrist with practiced ease.
"Quiet," Arthur whispered directly into his ear, his breath smelling faintly of peppermint and old dust. "They're using thermal imaging. We have less than thirty seconds before they cycle their optics to standard heat signatures."
Julian pressed his back hard against the cold metal casing of the machine, his chest heaving as he tried to control his ragged breathing. Across the warehouse, the muffled sound of suppressed gunfire erupted as the tactical team fired blindly into the shadows to flush them out.
"Why did you really help me?" Julian whispered back, his voice trembling with anger and confusion. "You said you were part of the initial trial. If my father is running this operation, why are you fighting him?"
Arthur reached into his old brown jacket and pulled out a small, heavy metallic cylinder, pressing it firmly into Julian’s palm. It felt dense, pulsing with a faint, warm vibration.
"Because forty years ago, I was the one who designed the containment failure that was supposed to kill your father," Arthur confessed, his voice heavy with ancient regret. "I tried to stop him from commercializing immortality. Instead, I created a monster that cannot be killed by conventional means."

Before Julian could process the staggering confession, a bright green laser dot materialized directly on Arthur’s forehead, painting the old man's skin with an inescapable, lethal precision.
