Chapter 15 - The Sidewalk Again

The morning sun cast long, sharp shadows across the bustling downtown avenue, bathing the concrete sidewalk in a warm, golden light. Pedestrians rushed past in a blur of gray suits, coffee cups, and hurried conversations, completely unaware of the invisible wars fought and won in the dark corners of their city.

Julian stood near the corner of Fourth and Main, wearing his dark blue hoodie and jeans, his black backpack resting securely on his right shoulder. In his hands, he held a fresh takeaway food container and a clear plastic water bottle. He scanned the crowded pavement until his eyes locked onto a familiar figure sitting hunched over on a tattered piece of cardboard near the brick wall of an old cafe.

The elderly man wore an old brown jacket and blue jeans, his unkempt grey hair and messy beard catching the morning breeze. As Julian approached, the old man slowly lifted his head, revealing cloudy blue eyes that held a lifetime of secrets, exhaustion, and quiet resilience.

Julian stopped three feet away, kneeling down gracefully to eye level. He kept his posture open, his breathing calm and deliberate, matching the exact rhythm of the world waking up around them.

"Sir, I saw you sitting here," Julian said softly, his voice carrying the gentle weight of a promise kept. "Please have this."

The old man stared at the food container for a long moment, a slow, knowing smile breaking through the weathered lines of his face. He reached out with a trembling hand, his fingers brushing against Julian's wrist.

"Keep your guard up, boy," Arthur rasped softly, his eyes suddenly flashing with a sharp, familiar intelligence. "The next wave is already walking toward us."

Julian didn't look back. Instead, he smiled quietly, turned his head toward the oncoming crowd of the city, and waited for the first footsteps to reach them.
