Chapter 12 - The Leap of Faith

"Arthur!" Julian screamed, frozen in horror as the old man collapsed onto the dusty concrete floor.

"Go, Julian! Don't let them take the cylinder!" Arthur coughed out, blood pooling at the corner of his mouth as his cloudy blue eyes stared upward toward the broken skylight.

David Vance didn't even look down at the dying man. His rifle smoothly pivoted back toward Julian, the green laser dot locking onto the center of Julian’s chest. "Don't be a fool, Julian. You can't outrun the network. Hand over the cylinder, and make your death mean something for the future of our family."

Julian looked from his father’s cold, unyielding face down to the heavy metallic cylinder in his hand. The weight of it felt like a anchor pulling him toward a destiny he never asked for. But as he looked at Arthur’s motionless form on the ground, a profound, irreversible realization settled deep into his bones. There was no family left here. There was only a machine consuming its own children to keep itself alive.

"My name is Julian Vance," Julian said softly, his voice steadying with sudden, absolute clarity. "And my father died fifteen years ago."

With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Julian turned and hurled the heavy metallic cylinder directly into the massive glass control booth suspended above the loading dock.

The glass shattered into a million glittering shards as the cylinder detonated on impact, releasing a blinding wave of electromagnetic energy that instantly fried every digital screen, camera, and tactical radio within a hundred-foot radius.

Pitch-black darkness swallowed the warehouse entirely, accompanied by the catastrophic whining sound of failing power grids. In the split-second of total blindness, Julian dove headfirst through the open loading bay doors into the cool afternoon air, tumbling down the concrete embankment toward the river below just as the warehouse behind him imploded in a muffled roar of controlled fire.
