Chapter 4: Shadows at the Gate

By noon, the inevitable arrived. Two local sheriff's cruisers pulled into the gravel driveway of the garage, lights flashing without sirens.
Hank stood at the open garage bay door, wiping grease from his palms as Sheriff Dave Miller—a man Hank had known for twenty years—stepped out of the head vehicle. Beside him stood Julian Vance, wearing a crisp grey suit and holding a thick leather briefcase.
""Hank,"" Sheriff Miller said, looking uncomfortable. ""We got a report from Mr. Vance here. He claims you took his stepdaughter from a gas station last night.""
Julian stepped forward, putting on an expression of deep, paternal distress. ""Officer, my late wife’s daughter ran away in a state of emotional confusion. This man intimidated me and took her. I demand she be returned to my custody immediately.""
Hank didn't budge an inch. ""She came to me begging for help, Dave. She’s seven years old with a broken arm and bruises on her neck.""
Julian’s eyes flickered with annoyance. ""She fell down the stairs at our estate last week! I have medical records proving she was treated by a private physician!""
""Private physician?"" Hank stepped forward, his shadow towering over Julian. ""You mean a doctor you paid to keep quiet?""
""Enough,"" Sheriff Miller interrupted, holding up a hand. ""Hank, where is the girl?""
Before Hank could answer, Sarah walked out from the side door holding a folder. ""She's inside resting. And before you do anything, Dave, you need to look at these photographs I took this morning. I was an ER nurse for twelve years. Those bruises aren't from falling down stairs. They are thumb marks.""

Julian’s composure cracked for a fraction of a second. ""This is absurd! I am her legal guardian!""
""Then child protective services can sort it out,"" Sheriff Miller said firmly, looking at Julian with renewed scrutiny. ""Nobody is leaving state lines today.""
