Chapter 12: In the Midst of the Storm

Three days later, a sudden summer rainstorm swept through the valley, washing away the heat and dust of the past week.
In the garage, the air was warm and smelled of sweet rain. Mia sat at the workbench, painting a small wooden birdhouse Hank had helped her build.
Hank walked over with a pair of heavy shears. ""Ready for the big moment?""
Mia smiled brightly, holding up her right arm. The cast was dry, dirty, and covered in colorful drawings made by Hank, Sarah, and the entire motorcycle club.
Carefully, Hank worked the medical shears along the side of the fiberglass, peeling back the padded lining. With a gentle pop, the cast came off.
Mia wiggled her fingers, flexing her wrist slowly. ""It feels light!""
""It's going to be a little weak for a few weeks,"" Hank chuckled, handing her a damp cloth to wipe her skin. ""But you're healed up good.""

Sarah walked into the garage carrying a tray of freshly baked cinnamon rolls. ""Look at that! Good as new!""
Mia looked at her arm, then looked at Hank and Sarah. The fear that had gripped her life for months was gone, replaced by the simple warmth of a rainy afternoon in a place where she was wanted.
