Chapter 11: The Trap Closes

That evening, Sheriff Miller led a search team to Julian Vance’s sprawling country estate. Hank and Elena waited near the police cruiser at the bottom of the long driveway while officers entered the property.
An hour passed under the dim yellow driveway lights before Sheriff Miller walked out carrying an old wooden jewelry box and a thick manila envelope.
""We found it,"" Miller said, pulling a pair of latex gloves off his hands. ""Hidden under the floorboards in the girl's bedroom, just like she said. A handwritten will signed by Sarah Miller two weeks before she passed, witnessed by her attending nurse.""
Elena opened the envelope carefully, skimming the handwritten pages under a flashlight. ""It's explicit. She left the estate, the trust, and full legal guardianship of Mia to her sister in Oregon—a sister Julian claimed didn't exist.""
""What about Julian?"" Hank asked.

""We found something else in his study,"" Sheriff Miller said grimly. ""Offshore bank accounts where he was liquidating the child's trust fund. Tax fraud, embezzlement, and child endangerment. The state trooper is picking him up at his office right now.""
Hank looked up at the massive, dark mansion on the hill. It had looked like an inescapable fortress to a small seven-year-old girl. Now, it was just an empty house built on lies.
