Chapter 13: Justice Delivered

Two weeks later, the final court hearing took place. Julian Vance sat at the defense table in an orange jumpsuit, flanked by public defenders. His high-priced lawyers had abandoned him once the financial fraud charges were unsealed by the federal prosecutor.

The evidence was overwhelming. The holographic will was authenticated, the hidden financial records were laid bare, and medical testimony confirmed a pattern of severe neglect and abuse.

Judge Harris read the verdict with quiet authority. Julian was sentenced to twelve years in state prison for child endangerment, fraud, and grand larceny.

As officers led Julian away in handcuffs, he looked back at Mia one last time. But Mia didn't shrink away. She sat straight in her chair, holding Hank’s hand, watching him leave without a trace of fear in her eyes.

Out in the hallway, Mia’s aunt, Clara—her mother’s sister from Oregon—was waiting. Clara had flown in as soon as Elena tracked her down. She was a gentle woman with the same warm hazel eyes as Mia’s mother.

Clara knelt down in front of Mia, tears streaming down her face. ""I searched for you everywhere, Mia. Julian told me after your mom died that you had been sent to a private boarding school overseas and didn't want to see anyone.""

Mia looked at Clara, recognizing the resemblance to her mother immediately. ""He lied about everything.""
