Chapter 1: Line in the Asphalt

The neon hum of the gas station sign vibrated through the damp night air. Hank—known on the highway simply as Jax—didn't flinch. He stood like a wall of scarred leather and heavy denim between the terrified girl and the man in the tailored coat.
Julian Vance took a slow, deliberate step back, his polished leather shoes squeaking against the wet asphalt. His smile didn't fade, but his eyes narrowed into cold, calculating slits.
""You don't know what you're getting involved in, old man,"" Julian said softly, adjusting his wool scarf. ""That child belongs to my household. She’s confused, injured, and prone to running away.""
""She’s terrified,"" Hank growled, his deep voice carrying the weight of a rumbling engine. ""And she’s got a broken arm. I don't care who you are or what paperwork you think you have in your pocket. You take one more step toward this kid, and we’re going to have a real problem.""
Behind Hank, Mia squeezed her eyes shut, her tiny fingers clutching the hem of his heavy leather jacket. Her heart pounded against her ribs like a trapped bird. For seven months, Julian’s voice had meant pain, dark rooms, and silence. But standing in the shadow of this towering stranger, the cold rain didn't feel quite as freezing.
Julian looked at Hank’s iron jaw, then glanced at the two other bikers stepping out from the shadows near the pumps. He knew when he was outnumbered.
""This isn't over,"" Julian murmured, pulling a smartphone from his coat. ""The police will hear about a kidnapping before the night is out.""
He turned on his heel and walked briskly toward his black sedan, the doors closing with a sharp, heavy thud. As the car sped off into the darkness, Hank turned around and slowly dropped to one knee.
""You okay, little one?"" Hank asked, his voice softening into something rough yet gentle.

Mia looked up through her tear-stained red hair, clutching her pink cast. ""He's coming back... he always comes back.""
""Not on my watch,"" Hank said quietly, offering her a large, calloused hand. ""Come on. Let’s get you out of the cold.""
