Chapter 8 - The Threshold of Memory

The hallway leading to Sarah’s private study was shrouded in deep shadows, the wall sconces dark due to the automated power lockdown. Julian walked slowly, holding Maya’s small hand in his right while his left hand guided them through the familiar darkness. The air here smelled faintly of aged paper, lavender, and old leather—a scent that hadn't changed in the three years since Sarah passed away.
As they reached the heavy oak door at the end of the hall, Julian noticed something that made his stomach drop. The brass handle was scarred with deep, fresh gouge marks, as if someone had tried to force it open with a heavy pry bar.
"Did you see this?" Maya whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the damaged wood.
"I see it," Julian said quietly. He reached inside his shirt, pulled out the tarnished iron key, and slid it into the keyhole. It fit with a familiar, heavy click. He turned it twice, feeling the ancient tumblers slide into place with a satisfying, mechanical thud.
The door swung inward, revealing a room that looked completely untouched by time. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, filled with leather-bound volumes, legal briefs, and botanical sketches. In the center of the room sat a massive mahogany desk, illuminated faintly by the moonlight filtering through the tall arched windows.
Julian stepped inside, shielding Maya behind him as his eyes swept the corners of the room. Nothing seemed disturbed, save for a single black folio sitting right in the middle of the desk blotter—a folio that had not been there when he last locked the room.
"Daddy, look," Maya said, pointing toward the corner near the fireplace.
Half-hidden behind a velvet armchair sat a modern digital server rack, its cooling fans humming with a low, sinister whir. It was wired directly into the antique floor vents, tapping into the fiber-optic trunk line that fed the entire estate.
Julian crossed the room quickly, kneeling beside the server rack. He pulled a portable diagnostic drive from his pocket and plugged it into the system's master port. The screen flickered, instantly displaying a continuous stream of outbound data packets streaming directly to an external IP address registered in the Cayman Islands—an account bearing Elena’s maiden name.
"She wasn't just managing the house," Julian muttered to himself, anger boiling just beneath his skin. "She was mirroring every single byte of Sarah’s intellectual property."
Before Julian could hit the purge command on his diagnostic drive, the heavy oak door behind them clicked shut with a sharp, echoing snap.
Julian whipped around, springing to his feet. Standing in the doorway, blocking the exit with a heavy iron fire poker in her hand, was Elena. Her black blazer was gone, revealing a stark white silk blouse underneath. Her long dark hair fell loosely around her face, framing a smile that was entirely unhinged.

"You really thought it would be that easy, didn't you, Julian?" Elena asked softly, stepping into the room and raising the iron poker.
