Chapter 1 - The Partition of Blood and Bread

The heavy porcelain plate clicked softly against the polished mahogany. Elena adjusted the crisp white linen napkin with deliberate, unhurried grace. Her black blazer suit was impeccably tailored, reflecting the sterile, cold luxury of the dining room. Around the long table, several children sat in silence, flanked by another woman who kept her eyes strictly averted.
Elena straightened up, her long dark hair sweeping across her shoulder. She looked down at the empty seat beside her, then glanced toward the doorway where ten-year-old Maya stood in her simple white button-down shirt and dark jeans.
"You eat there, my kids eat here," Elena said, her voice entirely devoid of warmth.
Before Maya could shrink back further into the shadows, heavy footsteps echoed across the marble foyer. Julian walked into the dining room, his tall frame clad in a sharp brown suit and a crisp blue dress shirt. He stopped abruptly beside his daughter, his brow furrowing as he took in the bizarre seating arrangement.
"Why aren't you at the table?" Julian asked, looking down at Maya.
Maya looked distressed, her small hands clutching the hem of her jeans. "She said I'm not a real child."
Elena did not flinch. She met Julian’s sudden, sharp glare with a cold, composed expression. "I'm teaching discipline," Elena responded, her tone level.
Julian’s jaw tightened. He stepped past his daughter, placing a heavy hand on her shoulder. "My daughter belongs here."
His gaze drifted upward, locking onto the blinking red light of the ceiling security camera perched silently in the corner of the room. Julian turned back, his eyes blazing with a suppressed fury that shook the heavy air of the room. He pointed a finger straight at Elena and demanded, "Bring the records, bring footage here! Explain why she was excluded from the house she funded!"

Elena’s face paled beneath her makeup, but before she could answer, the security monitor on the far wall flickered to life on its own, displaying a hidden archive folder labeled with Julian's late wife's initials.
