Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Archive

The sudden illumination of the monitor cast a pale, flickering blue light across the silent dining room. Julian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat. The folder labeled with Sarah’s initials—*S.M.W.*—sat blinking on the interface like an accusation from the grave. For three years, Julian had believed the digital infrastructure of this house was completely secure, managed by the corporate estate trust he had established before his second marriage. Now, the private feeds were broadcasting themselves in the open air.

Elena stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the floorboards. She reached for the remote on the sideboard, her composure cracking ever so slightly at the edges.

"Turn that off," Julian ordered, his voice dropping an octave into a dangerous register. He did not take his eyes off the screen. "Leave it, Elena. Let us see what kind of discipline you have been running in my absence."

On the display, time-stamped video files began to populate the queue. They weren't exterior security sweeps; they were interior feeds from the private corridors, the kitchen, and the very corners of this expansive dining hall. Maya shrank back further against the doorframe, wrapping her arms around her waist as if trying to make herself invisible. The other children at the long table sat frozen, their spoons suspended halfway to their mouths, terrified to move a muscle.

"You have no idea what it takes to manage this household," Elena said, her voice dropping the icy veneer to reveal a desperate edge. "You are gone for months, Julian. Tendering bids, acquiring assets, funding the foundations. You think money builds a home? Structure builds a home. Order builds a home. And that girl—" Elena pointed a manicured finger toward Maya—"reminds everyone of a past you refuse to bury."

Julian ignored her. He stepped toward the console, his fingers brushing the keypad. He punched in his master administrative override code—a sequence only he and Sarah had ever known. The screen refreshed, clearing away the directory to reveal a live, multi-angle grid of the entire ground floor. But it was the data log beneath the video feeds that made Julian’s blood run cold. There were financial transaction ledgers attached to every single camera node, showing recurring automated micro-transfers routed from Maya’s personal trust account directly into Elena’s private offshore holdings.

Julian slowly turned around, his eyes locking onto Elena with a terrifying clarity. "You’ve been draining her inheritance to fund your own family's lifestyle while starving her of a seat at my table?"

May you like

Elena straightened her black blazer, lifting her chin with a chilling defiance. "She doesn't own this house, Julian. I do. Look at the deed transfer timestamp from six months ago."
