Chapter 4 - The Arrival at Midnight

The headlights cut through the fog outside the floor-to-ceiling dining room windows, washing the room in a harsh, clinical white glare. A sleek black sedan idled by the grand fountain, its engine rumbling with low, muffled power. Julian’s eyes remained fixed on the monitor. On the auxiliary feed labeled Gate Camera 04, a tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal trench coat stepped out of the driver’s side, holding a leather briefcase.

"Who is that?" Julian demanded, his grip on Elena’s wrist tightening slightly before he let her go with a sharp flick of his hand.

Elena smoothed the fabric of her black blazer, regaining her composure with terrifying speed. She stepped back, smoothing her dark hair behind her ear. "That, Julian, is the actual owner of the corporate umbrella that currently holds your mortgage, your patents, and this dining room table. You were so busy playing the grieving father and the corporate savior that you didn't notice the foundation was hollowed out from underneath."

Maya clutched Julian’s arm, burying her face against his blue dress shirt. "Daddy, it's the man who comes when you're away. He tells me to go to my room and counts the silver."

Julian ignored Maya’s words for a second, his mind racing through corporate registries, legal loopholes, and hostile takeovers. None of it made sense. He was the majority shareholder of the parent company. No acquisition could occur without a direct shareholder vote, and he had his phone, his tokens, his authentication keys right here.

Unless...

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out his encrypted smartphone. The screen was completely black. He pressed the power button once, twice, ten times. Dead. The battery hadn't run out; the internal logic board had been remotely fried by an incoming over-the-air signal loop.

The heavy front door of the mansion clicked open. The sound of firm, unhurried footsteps echoed through the grand marble foyer, drawing closer to the dining room with every passing second. The other children at the table began to whimper softly, sensing the shift in atmospheric pressure. The woman sitting quietly among them stood up abruptly, bowing her head toward Elena as if in submission.

"You brought a corporate liquidator into my home?" Julian asked, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper.

Elena smiled, a slow, predatory curve of her lips. "I brought an auditor, Julian. To settle accounts. And as of three minutes ago, your daughter’s signature on that trust transfer has been fully verified by a federal magistrate."

The heavy double doors of the dining room swung wide open, and the man in the charcoal trench coat stepped inside, holding the leather briefcase like a weapon.
