Chapter 5 - The Auditor’s Ledger

The man standing in the doorway was not a stranger. As the harsh light of the dining room chandelier caught his profile, Julian felt the air leave his lungs. It was Marcus Vance—corporate counsel, former senior partner at the firm that handled Sarah’s estate, and the very man Julian had personally fired two years ago for severe financial irregularities.

Marcus adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his expression completely blank as he scanned the room. His eyes lingered for a fraction of a second on Maya, then shifted to Julian with a cold, practiced professionalism.

"Good evening, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, his voice carrying the polished cadence of a courtroom litigator. "I trust the transition of assets has been adequately explained to you by Mrs. Vance."

Julian took a step forward, placing himself squarely between Marcus and his trembling daughter. "Mrs. Vance? Elena is my wife, Marcus, not a legal proxy. And you are trespassing on private property."

Marcus chuckled softly, a dry, papery sound. He set his leather briefcase down on the long mahogany table, right beside a silver bowl of white flowers. With a slow, deliberate click of the brass latches, he opened the case and pulled out a thick stack of embossed legal documents bound with blue ribbon.

"Property definitions are notoriously fluid when backed by a court-ordered conservatorship," Marcus replied, sliding the top document across the polished wood toward Julian. "Sarah Vance’s will contained a dormant contingency clause. In the event of prolonged paternal absence—defined as more than forty-five consecutive days out of the country—custody and estate administration automatically revert to the designated alternate trustee."

Julian didn't look at the paper. He stared straight into Marcus’s eyes. "I was away on company business. Business this company generated."

"And while you were generating capital, you missed three mandatory psychiatric check-ins for the minor child," Marcus countered, pulling out a second sheet. "Signed off by Elena as your domestic partner and legal guardian ad litem. The court approved the temporary custody modification three weeks ago. You simply didn't receive the digital service notice because your primary communications router was routed through our corporate server."

Maya tugged hard on Julian’s sleeve, her small voice breaking the heavy tension in the room. "Daddy... he made me sign the papers on the kitchen island. He said if I didn't, they would take away my room and give my toys to the other kids."

Julian’s vision blurred with a hot, blinding wave of fury. He looked at Elena, who stood by the sideboard with her arms crossed, watching the exchange like an aristocrat observing a public execution. Every piece of the puzzle clicked into place—the isolation, the strange rules, the camera feeds, the systematic erasure of his daughter from her own home. It wasn't just a domestic dispute; it was a premeditated corporate coup designed to strip him of his family and his legacy.

Julian reached down, picked up the legal document Marcus had slid across the table, and ripped it cleanly down the middle in one violent motion.

"You can forge all the papers you want," Julian said, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "But you missed one crucial detail."
