Chapter 14 - The Final Confrontation

The courier lunged forward with surprising speed, swinging the heavy wrench in a sharp arc aimed directly at Julian’s ribs.

Julian anticipated the move. Years of corporate travel and hostile environments had taught him how to handle unexpected threats. He sidestepped the blow cleanly, letting the courier’s momentum carry him off balance. With a swift, decisive strike, Julian delivered a sharp palm-heel blow to the man’s wrist, sending the wrench clattering loudly across the stone floor.

Before the courier could recover, Julian pinned him against the cold concrete wall of the service corridor, his forearm pressing firmly against the man's chest.

"Who is paying you?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low. "Give me a name, or you spend the rest of the night in a federal holding cell right beside Marcus."

The courier gasped for air, struggling against Julian’s grip before going completely limp in resignation. "It was... it was the junior partner at the Geneva firm. He didn't want the land; he wanted the physical server drives from Sarah’s study before the marshals cataloged them. There's a hard drive behind the fireplace panel—a prototype neural backup that predates the company formation."

Julian slowly released his grip, stepping back while keeping a watchful eye on the man. "The neural backup... Sarah's final project."

"She knew," the courier wheezed, rubbing his bruised wrist. "Before she passed, she knew someone was trying to weaponize her research. That's why she set up the maritime trust, and that's why she left the access keys exclusively with Maya."

Julian stared at the man for a long moment, then nodded toward the front foyer. "Get out of here. Walk out the front gate, find your van, and don't ever look back at this valley again."

The courier didn't wait to be told twice. He scrambled toward the exit, his boots echoing against the marble floor until the heavy side door slammed shut behind him.

Julian turned around and walked slowly back up the service stairs, his mind racing. He returned to Sarah’s study, approached the grand stone fireplace, and pressed his fingers against the carved oak mantelpiece in the exact sequence Sarah had taught him on their wedding anniversary.

With a soft, pneumatic hiss, the wood paneling above the fireplace slid silently open, revealing a hidden compartment bathed in a gentle, warm amber light. Inside sat a single, flawless crystal data cylinder—the true heart of Sarah’s legacy, untouched by corporate greed, manipulation, or deceit.
