Chapter 5 - The Leverage

Julian released Marcus instantly, stumbling backward as his eyes locked onto the stranger holding his daughter’s hand. The man wore a wide-brimmed hat that shadowed his face, but the silver signet ring on his right hand gleamed under the hallway lights—a crest Julian recognized instantly from a file he thought had been permanently destroyed ten years ago.
“Hello, Julian,” the stranger said, his voice smooth, cultured, and chillingly familiar. “It has been a very long time.”
Lily looked up at the man, completely unafraid, which terrified Julian even more.
“Daddy, the nice man said he knew Mommy,” Lily said innocently, squeezing the stranger’s gloved fingers.
Julian’s chest tightened as if trapped in a vice. The mention of Lily’s mother—who had allegedly died in a tragic car accident five years to the day—sent a shockwave through his nervous system. He took a tentative step forward, his hands raised defensively.
“Let go of her,” Julian commanded, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and fury. “Whoever you are, this has nothing to do with a child.”
The stranger chuckled softly, a dry, humorless sound. He knelt down to Lily’s eye level.
“Sweetheart, why don’t you go check on the nice man in the grey suit outside? He has a surprise for you in the car,” the stranger instructed gently.
Lily nodded eagerly and skipped down the hallway, leaving Julian alone with the architect of his present nightmare. The stranger stood up, adjusting his coat, and finally tilted his head back, revealing sharp, weathered features and eyes that matched Julian’s own in stubborn defiance.
“You didn’t really think you could bury the past under concrete and offshore accounts, did you, brother?” the man asked softly.

Julian stepped back, the horrifying truth dawning on him just as his phone buzzed with a bank notification showing his primary corporate account had just been drained to zero.
