Chapter 12 - The Truth of the Fire

Arthur stepped out from the shadows beside Julian, his pistol lowered, his face pale under the flickering work lights.

“It was never about the corporate merger, was it, Evelyn?” Arthur asked, his voice shaking slightly as he looked at the woman he had trusted for five years. “The fire ten years ago... you set it, didn't you?”

Evelyn laughed, a sharp, metallic sound that lacked any warmth.

“Your father built this company on the backs of ruined partners, Arthur,” Evelyn said, swirling the ice in her glass. “He ruined my family when I was a child. I spent twenty years meticulously acquiring every share, every mortgage, and every secret until I held the entire Sterling dynasty in the palm of my hand. Julian was just a convenient pawn who married into the target demographic.”

Julian stared at her in stunned disbelief. The car accident that had supposedly killed his wife five years ago flashed through his mind, overlaid with the memory of Evelyn arriving at the hospital just hours after the crash with comforting words and a signed contract.

“My wife... you had her killed,” Julian whispered, the horrifying realization crushing the last remnants of his strength.

“She was going to expose the offshore accounts,” Evelyn replied coldly, her smirk vanishing, replaced by a mask of pure venom. “She had a conscience. People with consciences don't survive in our world, Julian.”

Marcus pushed off the crates, stepping forward with the hunting knife glinting under the lights.
