Chapter 2 - The Hidden Lens

Beneath a polished mahogany table leg, half-hidden by a cluster of deflating white balloons, a tiny red LED light blinked with rhythmic, sinister precision. The miniature recording device hummed quietly, capturing every whispered insult, every tear, and every drop of spilled frosting. Just a few feet away, Marcus—a man in a sharp grey suit—stepped out from the shadows of the arched doorway. His eyes locked onto Julian with a cold, predatory gleam that suggested he was not a mere guest, but an orchestrator.
Julian noticed Marcus out of the corner of his eye, his maternal instincts superseded by a sudden, freezing paranoia. He tightened his grip on Lily, who buried her face deeper into his bow tie, whispering that she wanted to go home. Julian took a deliberate step forward, shielding his daughter from Evelyn’s piercing gaze.
“You crossed a line tonight, Evelyn,” Julian growled, his voice vibrating with restrained rage. “This isn't about business. This is a child’s birthday.”
Evelyn crossed her arms, the expensive silk of her red dress rustling softly.
“Business and family have always been the same thing to this household, Julian,” Evelyn said, stepping closer with a predatory grace. “You just forgot who holds the mortgage on your entire empire.”
Before Julian could process the terrifying implication of her words, his phone buzzed violently against his thigh. He pulled it out with a shaking hand, the screen illuminating his tense features in the dimming light of the ballroom. A single notification blinked fiercely across the display, reading an incoming call from an Unknown Caller.

Julian stared at the screen, his breath catching in his throat as the phone began to vibrate again, refusing to stop.
