Chapter 11 - The Trap Laid Bare

The interior of Warehouse 14 was a vast, echoing chamber filled with rows of empty wooden crates and hanging industrial work lights that swayed gently in the draft. In the exact center of the room, sitting bound to a metal folding chair, was Lily. Her pink dress was stained with mud and cake, but she was unharmed. Standing beside her was Evelyn, holding a glass of amber whiskey, while Marcus leaned against a stack of crates nearby, casually cleaning a hunting knife.
There was no sign of the tactical team or the armored van. The entire scene felt staged—a theatrical set prepared specifically for their arrival.
Julian rushed forward, but Arthur grabbed his shoulder, pulling him back into the cover of a stack of pallets.
“Wait, Julian. Look at the corners,” Arthur whispered urgently, pointing toward the rafters.
Julian squinted through the gloom. Mounted along the steel beams were half a dozen automated security turrets, their laser sights currently locked onto the empty space where Julian and Arthur stood. They had walked straight into a kill zone.
Evelyn turned her head toward their hiding spot, raising her glass in a silent toast.
“Welcome to the family reunion, boys,” Evelyn called out, her voice carrying clearly across the hollow room. “We’ve been waiting for you to complete the quorum.”
Lily spotted Julian behind the pallets and began to cry out again, her small voice echoing off the metal walls.
“Daddy! Help me!” Lily sobbed, struggling against the ropes that bound her small wrists.
Julian’s vision blurred with rage. He shrugged off Arthur’s restraining hand and stepped out into the open, his hands raised palms up, putting himself squarely in the path of the laser sights.
“Let her go, Evelyn,” Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the corrugated iron walls. “You wanted the empire? You have it. The accounts are empty. The deeds are yours. Just let my daughter walk away.”
Evelyn took a slow sip of her whiskey, her crimson lips curving into a cold, triumphant smile.

“The empire was never enough, Julian,” Evelyn replied softly, stepping closer to Lily. “Some debts can only be paid in blood.”
