Chapter 9 - The Courthouse Gambit

The armored federal transport vehicle screeched to a halt outside the grand granite steps of the federal district courthouse, its sirens cutting off mid-wail as Agent Miller shoved the heavy door open. Julian stepped out into the damp morning air, holding Maya tightly by the hand as a sea of news reporters and camera crews swarmed the perimeter flashbulbs blinding them in the gray light.

"Mr. Vance! Is it true your wife’s estate was built on a stolen trust?" shouted a reporter from the front line, thrusting a microphone toward Julian’s face.

Miller’s tactical team formed a protective wedge around Julian and Maya, pushing through the media blockade and up the sweeping stone stairs toward the heavy oak entrance of the courthouse.

"Keep moving, do not answer questions," Miller instructed, his hand resting securely on his holstered sidearm as they breached the security check-point.

Inside the cavernous marble lobby, the digital docket board flickered rhythmically, displaying the emergency probate hearing scheduled for Courtroom 4B—the very courtroom where the final disposition of Maya’s stolen inheritance was set to be rubber-stamped by a compromised judge.

"We have three minutes before the docket goes live," Julian said, checking his watch as they rushed toward the private elevators reserved for court officers.

As the elevator doors slid shut, sealing out the noise of the press and the damp city air, Maya looked up at Julian with an expression of profound, quiet wisdom that seemed far beyond her years.

"She has the real key to the vault in her pocket, Daddy. The one with the green stone," Maya said, her voice completely steady.

Julian frowned, remembering the key ring Eleanor had carried for years—the one with the blue ribbon that opened the grandfather clock, and the mysterious green stone key that Eleanor had always claimed was just a decorative heirloom.

"The green stone key," Julian murmured, realization dawning on him. "It doesn't open a box in the vault. It opens the physical safety deposit box at the Federal Reserve downtown where the original corporate charter is kept."

Before Miller could process the implications, the elevator chimed softly, and the doors slid open directly onto the fourth-floor landing, revealing a sight that made every muscle in Julian’s body tense.

Standing outside Courtroom 4B, holding a heavy leather briefcase and talking smoothly to the presiding probate judge, was Victoria Vance, dressed in Eleanor’s spare black suit as if she were the rightful legal representative of the entire estate.

"Your Honor, my sister was unfortunately detained by a minor administrative misunderstanding," Victoria was saying smoothly to the aging judge, before turning her head and locking eyes directly with Julian.
