Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Vault

The glowing screen on the dining room wall flickered violently, cycling through static before resolving into a crisp, high-definition feed of the subterranean security vault. Julian stared in absolute disbelief at the unfamiliar silhouette moving effortlessly among rows of titanium lockboxes—boxes containing the original venture capital portfolios, intellectual property deeds, and the primary trust fund documents that bore Maya’s name as the sole beneficiary.

"Who is that?" Julian demanded, spinning around to face Eleanor, whose composure for the first time fractured into a micro-expression of sheer panic.

Eleanor stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the imported Italian marble, trying to block Julian’s line of sight to the monitor.

"That is none of your concern, Julian. It’s just routine maintenance by the estate management firm," Eleanor lied smoothly, though her right eye twitched slightly—a dead giveaway that she had lost control of the narrative she had spent years carefully constructing.

Julian shoved past her with enough force to make her stumble against the edge of the mahogany sideboard.

"Maintenance doesn't carry a heavy-duty thermal drill at midnight, Eleanor! That vault holds the foundation certificates of every single asset we own—assets that Maya’s late mother legally transferred directly to her before the accident!" Julian yelled, his breath coming in hot, angry gasps.

Maya clutched the hem of Julian’s brown suit jacket, burying her face against his side as the ambient noise of the sprawling dining room seemed to close in around them like a cage.

"Daddy, the man in the video has the key ring with the blue ribbon," Maya murmured, pointing a small finger directly at the glowing monitor.

Julian froze. The key ring with the blue ribbon was not kept in the vault; it was kept in Eleanor’s personal jewelry box upstairs, locked behind a biometric scanner that only she could open.

"You gave them access," Julian whispered, the realization hitting him with the physical weight of a falling beam. "You’ve been systematically draining her trust to fund your brother’s offshore accounts."

Eleanor forced a cold, chilling smile onto her lips, her eyes darkening as she stepped back into the shadows cast by the chandelier.

"You think you own this empire just because your name is on the front door, Julian, but look at the corporate registry update that processed thirty seconds ago."
