Chapter 7 - The Sister’s Shadow

The woman standing in the doorway lowered the heavy iron fireplace poker slightly, a chilling, mocking smile playing across lips that were the exact mirror image of Eleanor’s. Her dark hair was loose, falling around her shoulders in stark contrast to Eleanor’s severe corporate bun, but the cold, calculating glint in her eyes was unmistakable.

"You must be wondering how I managed to walk through federal security without setting off a single biometric alarm," the woman said, stepping further into the study while closing the heavy oak door behind her with a dull thud.

Julian tightened his grip on Maya’s shoulder, pulling the little girl closer as he positioned himself directly between her and the intruder.

"You’re Victoria. The courts certified you as deceased following the psychiatric facility fire in upstate New York twelve years ago," Julian stated, his voice steady despite the adrenaline hammering against his ribs.

Victoria let out a short, dry laugh, tapping the iron poker against her thigh with a rhythmic, hypnotic cadence.

"The state needs bodies to close files, Julian, and my dear sister Eleanor was more than happy to provide a Jane Doe dental record if it meant securing our family’s inheritance free and clear," Victoria explained, her tone conversational, as if they were discussing the weather rather than murder and identity theft.

Maya clutched Julian’s brown suit jacket, her small voice cutting through the tense air in the small study.

"She’s the one who locked me in the basement last winter when the heat broke," Maya whispered, her words hitting Julian with the force of a physical blow.

Julian felt a blinding rage eclipse his fear, his muscles tensing as he prepared to lunge forward regardless of the iron weapon in Victoria’s hand.

"You tortured a child because she knew the truth about the estate transfers," Julian growled, taking a deliberate step forward.

Victoria didn’t flinch; instead, she raised the heavy iron poker and pointed it directly at the leather-bound ledger clutched in Julian’s left hand.

"I didn't torture her, Julian—I educated her in the realities of survival, something you were far too soft to ever manage," Victoria sneered, her eyes narrowing as she took a slow step closer. "And now that my dear sister is safely detained by your federal friends, I am taking full control of the primary portfolio before the probate judge can freeze the remaining accounts."

Julian glanced toward the study’s side window, calculating the distance to the terrace doors, but Victoria anticipated his movement, shifting her stance to block the exit.

"Don't even think about it, Julian. The perimeter gates are locked, and the security grid is under my exclusive command," Victoria warned, raising the poker higher.

Suddenly, the red emergency lights on the ceiling smoke detectors flashed once, followed by the crisp, mechanical click of the smart-home intercom system activating throughout the entire estate.

"Attention all sectors," a synthesized voice announced from the speakers. "Federal override initiated by Chief Investigator Miller. All perimeter exits are now sealed."

Victoria froze, her head snapping toward the ceiling speaker in sheer disbelief as the heavy front doors of the mansion were blown open with a concussive boom.
