Chapter 4 - The Federal Warrant

The heavy tactical boots of the private security guards echoed against the Italian marble floor as they fanned out across the dining room, completely surrounding Julian and the terrified little girl. Agent Miller slipped his gold badge back into his charcoal suit pocket, holding out a thick Manila folder bound with red evidence tape.
"Mr. Julian Vance, you are instructed to surrender all personal electronic devices and vacate the premises within fifteen minutes under federal court order docket number eighty-four-B," Miller announced, his voice devoid of any human warmth.
Julian stepped protectively in front of Maya, his chest heaving as he stared at the federal agent in absolute disbelief.
"There must be a mistake! I founded this company, I own this property, and this is my home!" Julian shouted, his voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. "Show me the underlying affidavit for this seizure!"
Eleanor adjusted the lapels of her black suit with agonizing slowness, a triumphant smirk playing at the corners of her thin lips.
"There is no mistake, Julian. Agent Miller represents the bankruptcy receivership that has been quietly managing our liquidity for the past six months while you were busy playing the benevolent philanthropist with funds that didn't belong to you," Eleanor stated clearly, her voice cutting through the tense atmosphere like a scalpel.
Maya clutched Julian’s hand so tightly her knuckles turned paper white.
"Daddy, they're the same men who came to my school last week and took my art supplies," Maya whispered, her eyes welling with tears she refused to let fall.
Julian looked down at the little girl, a sudden wave of fierce protectiveness washing away his shock and replacing it with cold, calculated resolve.
"You forged her signature on the bankruptcy filings as well, didn't you, Eleanor?" Julian asked, turning back to his wife with eyes that burned with a quiet, terrifying fury. "You used a minor's trust to backstop your brother's failing real estate developments."
Eleanor’s smile faltered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of pure panic that she quickly masked with an icy glare.
"Prove it, Julian. Every document in this house has been notarized, filed, and approved by the highest courts in the state," Eleanor hissed, stepping closer.
Agent Miller stepped between them, holding up a hand to halt any further confrontation.
"Mr. Vance, step away from the child and place your hands on the table," Miller commanded, as the two guards behind him unsnapped the retention straps on their heavy holsters.

Before Julian could comply or protest further, the smart-home control panel beside the doorway flashed brilliant crimson, and every television and speaker in the house simultaneously began playing a high-resolution audio recording of Eleanor and her brother discussing the embezzlement scheme in explicit detail.
