Chapter 8 - The Breach at Dawn

The concussion wave from the front entrance shattered the decorative stained-glass transom above the study door, sending a glittering cascade of colored glass shards across the Persian rug. Victoria spun around toward the hallway, her iron fireplace poker raised defensively as heavy tactical boots rushed up the grand staircase with thunderous velocity.
"Drop the weapon! Federal agents, drop the weapon now!" Agent Miller’s voice bellowed down the corridor, cutting through the swirling dust and debris.
Victoria didn’t hesitate; she sprinted toward the French doors leading to the private balcony, shattering the double-paned glass with a furious swing of the iron poker before diving headfirst into the misty morning air outside.
"She's heading for the east perimeter wall!" Julian shouted, grabbing Maya’s hand and pulling her safely behind the heavy mahogany desk as Miller and three tactical officers surged into the study.
Agent Miller paused by the shattered balcony doors, assessing the drop before speaking rapidly into his shoulder-mounted radio.
"Perimeter team, secure the garden terrace! Subject is attempting to breach the north service gate!" Miller ordered, before turning back to Julian and the little girl with a look of urgent concern. "Are you both unharmed?"
Julian nodded, brushing a stray piece of glass from Maya’s shoulder as he handed the leather-bound ledger and the master recovery drive directly to the federal investigator.
"Victoria Vance is alive. She faked her death twelve years ago with Eleanor’s help to execute this exact corporate takeover," Julian said, his voice hard with exhausted determination. "Every document proving their conspiracy is on that drive."
Miller took the items, sliding them into a heavy waterproof evidence pouch with practiced efficiency.
"We suspected an accomplice had been operating the estate's shadow accounts from an off-site terminal, but we never imagined it was a ghost with a verified death certificate," Miller admitted, signaling for two medics to enter the room and check on Maya.
Maya allowed the medic to check her pulse and examine her scraped knee, her eyes never leaving the shattered balcony where Victoria had vanished into the gray morning fog.
"She left her notebook on the windowsill," Maya whispered, pointing a small finger toward a small, black leather notebook resting near the broken glass.
Julian walked over cautiously, picking up the notebook with two fingers and opening the cover to find a detailed floor plan of the federal courthouse downtown, complete with handwritten notes highlighting the exact schedule of tomorrow morning's probate hearing.
"She isn't running away from the arrest, Miller," Julian said, holding up the open notebook for the agent to see. "She’s heading straight for the courthouse to intercept the judge before the asset freeze can be legally processed."
Miller’s face hardened instantly as he pressed his radio transmitter against his collar.
