Chapter 6 - The Visitor at the Gate

The voice of Uncle Arthur grated through the intercom speaker, stripping away the last illusion of safety that the luxury mansion had provided. Julian stood frozen with Marcus in his arms, the boy’s small frame trembling against his chest. The three children near the entryway huddled together, whimpering softly as the harsh blue light from the wall panel illuminated the room like an interrogation cell. Elena stared at the screen, her face drained of all color, her golden gown looking suddenly like a shroud under the unforgiving lights.

"Julian, don't answer him," Elena warned, stepping closer and grabbing his sleeve with trembling fingers. "If you open that door, we are walking straight into a slaughterhouse."

"And if I don't?" Julian asked bitterly, his eyes locked on the live feed of the black armored sedan idling outside their gates. "He owns the property, the security codes, and the shell corporations that fund our entire existence. He can cut off our oxygen, our water, and our lives with a single phone call."

On the screen, Uncle Arthur stepped closer to the camera mounted on the security pillar. Even through the grainy lens, the old man’s eyes gleamed with a predatory sharpness that belied his gray hair and walking cane. He raised a gloved hand and tapped the glass of the camera twice, as if he could see right through it into the very center of the room.

"I know you're listening, Julian," Arthur's raspy voice continued, echoing off the high ceilings. "I saw the ledger. I saw your little wife trying to play the hero. Did she tell you how she earned her place in this house? Did she tell you whose family she had to betray to secure your partnership?"

Julian looked down at Elena, his expression darkening with suspicion. "What is he talking about?"

"It's a lie," Elena whispered fiercely, shaking her head. "He's trying to turn us against each other before he comes inside."

"Open the ledger, Julian," Arthur commanded through the speaker, his tone shifting from playful to commanding. "Turn to page forty-two. Look at the signature authorizing the transfer that bought this very estate. It's not my signature. It's hers."

Julian hesitated, his heart hammering against his ribs. He slowly lowered Marcus to the floor, telling the boy to stay behind the heavy mahogany dining table. With rigid steps, Julian walked back to the table where the leather-bound book lay open under the golden glow of the chandelier. His fingers, usually so steady when signing multimillion-dollar contracts, trembled as he flipped the heavy parchment pages until he reached the designated number. His breath caught in his throat. There, at the bottom of a wire transfer authorization dated twelve years ago—the exact week of his brother's supposed death—was Elena's signature, clear as day.

"You bought this house with blood money?" Julian whispered, looking up slowly to find Elena staring back at him with a mixture of terror and resignation.

"I didn't have a choice, Julian," Elena choked out, fresh tears spilling over her cheeks. "Arthur told me if I didn't sign, he would kill my brother."

Before Julian could demand to know how many more lies she was hiding, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion echoed with a deafening, metallic crash as they were breached from the outside.
