Chapter 10 - The Sweet-Smelling Poison

The sweet, floral scent of almond and vanilla hung innocently in the air for a fraction of a second before Julian recognized the unmistakable, paralyzing signature of aerosolized fentanyl.
"Hold your breath!" Julian roared, lunging toward Marcus and sweeping the boy up into his arms, while simultaneously grabbing Elena by the wrist.
The three small children near the entryway coughed once, their eyes rolling back instantly as their little legs buckled beneath them, collapsing softly onto the marble floor. The two tactical guards stood like statues, completely unaffected behind their specialized gas masks. Uncle Arthur pulled a sleek, medical-grade respirator from his overcoat pocket, snapping it over his nose and mouth with calm, practiced efficiency.
"A bit dramatic, I know," Arthur’s muffled voice echoed through the plastic mask. "But efficiency has always been my hallmark, Julian. You can't negotiate when you're unconscious, and you certainly can't testify."
David staggered forward another step, gasping for air as the toxic mist enveloped him. His hollow eyes locked onto Julian with a desperate plea before his knees gave out, sending him crashing hard against the marble floor.
"David!" Julian screamed, but as he opened his mouth to shout, the sweet vapor rushed into his lungs.
A heavy, leaden numbness instantly flooded Julian’s limbs. His vision blurred, the brilliant light of the crystal chandelier fracturing into a thousand blinding shards of gold and white. Elena gasped beside him, her golden gown swirling around her ankles as she slid down the pillar, losing consciousness before she hit the ground. Marcus grew dead weight in Julian’s arms, his small eyelids fluttering shut as the darkness closed in. Julian fought back with every ounce of his remaining strength, taking two unsteady steps toward Arthur, but his legs refused to obey. The floor rushed up to meet him, hard and cold against his cheek.
As consciousness slipped away, Julian saw Uncle Arthur walking slowly past his fallen body, stepping over David’s limp form without a second glance. The old man reached out and pressed a sequence of buttons on the wall control panel, locking down every interior bulkhead in the mansion.

"Sweet dreams, my children," Arthur's muffled voice faded into the distance.
