Chapter 13 - The Ultimate Choice

The cold steel barrel of the pistol pressed against Marcus’s temple, the boy letting out a terrified, high-pitched scream that echoed off the damp concrete walls of the underground vault.
"No! Leave him alone!" Elena shrieked, straining so violently against her bonds that the steel pillar dug red marks into her shoulders. "Take me! Kill me instead!"
Julian felt his entire world narrow down to the small, trembling frame of his son. The millions of dollars, the luxury mansion, the prestige of the Vance name—it all turned to dust in an instant. There was no wealth worth this price, no legacy worth the blood of an innocent child.
"Put the gun down, Arthur," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm, stripped of all emotion. "Put the gun down, and I'll sign whatever you want."
Arthur nodded approvingly to the guard, who immediately lowered the weapon from Marcus’s head. The boy collapsed back onto the concrete floor, sobbing uncontrollably as Julian scrambled across the space, pulling his son into his bound arms and holding him tight against his chest.
"A wise decision, Julian," Arthur said, stepping closer and tossing a sleek digital tablet and a stylus onto the floor in front of them. "The confession is already drafted. All you have to do is record a video statement admitting to running the syndicate, sign the digital transfer documents, and agree to the federal indictment tomorrow morning."
Julian looked down at the tablet. The screen glowed with a typed confession detailing years of money laundering, corporate fraud, and extortion—crimes he had never committed, but which fit his signature perfectly.
"And my family?" Julian asked, not looking up from the screen. "Do they walk free? Do the children go to safety?"
"Once the transfer is verified by my offshore contacts, Elena and Marcus will be free to leave the country," Arthur promised smoothly. "The orphans will be placed into a state-run program. You have my word."
"Your word is worth less than dirt, Arthur," David called out from the darkness across the vault. "He's lying, Julian! The moment you sign that tablet, he'll eliminate all of us to tie up the loose ends!"
Arthur sighed, shaking his head. "David, you always were a pessimist." He signaled the second tactical guard, who drew a suppressed pistol and leveled it directly at David’s chest. "One more word out of you, brother, and your journey ends right here on this cold floor."
Julian looked from the tablet to his weeping son, then across the room to David, and finally toward Elena, whose eyes met his with a silent, desperate message.
Julian picked up the stylus with his bound hands, hovering the tip just inches above the digital signature line.
"I'm ready," Julian whispered. "Record it."
May you like
Arthur smiled, raising his own phone to begin recording the confession, completely unaware of the heavy metallic screech echoing down the reinforced ventilation shaft behind him.
