Chapter 11 - Awakening in the Dark

The scent of burnt copper and stale dust was the first thing that registered in Julian’s mind before the throbbing pain behind his eyes exploded with blinding intensity. He groaned, shifting his weight, only to realize his wrists were bound behind his back with heavy plastic zip-ties. He was no longer in the opulent dining room. The air was damp and cold, smelling of ancient stone and damp earth.

"Julian?" a soft, trembling voice called out from the darkness to his left.

"Elena?" Julian rasped, his throat feeling as though it had been scrubbed with sandpaper. He blinked rapidly, forcing his eyes to adjust to the dim, amber glow of a single emergency exit bulb overhead.

He was sitting on a concrete floor inside what appeared to be the mansion's subterranean fallout shelter—a windowless vault built deep into the bedrock beneath the estate. Beside him, Elena was tied to a steel support pillar, her gorgeous golden gown torn and stained with dust, though her eyes were wide and alert. A few feet away, Marcus was stirring, groaning softly as he blinked against the gloom. The three small children were huddled in a tight cluster nearby, still sleeping deeply from the lingering effects of the gas. And slumped against the opposite wall, breathing heavily, was David.

"Are you alright?" Julian asked, struggling against the tight plastic biting into his skin.

"I'm alive, for now," Elena whispered, her voice shaking as she scanned the shadowed corners of the underground room. "Where are we? How did we get down here?"

"Arthur's panic room," David answered from across the vault, his voice raspy and weak. "The real one. Not the decoy suite upstairs. He built this bunker fifty years ago when he first started laundering money for the syndicate. There's only one way out, and the biometric scanner requires Arthur's iris and pulse."

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. He looked around the confined space, searching for anything—a sharp edge, a stray tool, a piece of exposed metal—that could help them break the zip-ties. His eyes caught the glint of a heavy steel ventilation grate set high up in the back wall. It was too small for an adult to fit through, but perhaps big enough for a child.

"Marcus," Julian called out gently, crawling across the concrete toward his son. "Marcus, wake up, buddy. Look at me."

Marcus fluttered his eyes open, tears welling instantly in his lashes as he saw his bound father. "Dad? Where are we? Where are the other kids?"

"We're going to be fine," Julian lied smoothly, pressing his bound hands against Marcus's small shoulders. "I need you to be very brave. Can you do that for me?"

Before Marcus could answer, a heavy iron security door at the far end of the bunker clicked loudly, and the harsh beam of a flashlight cut through the darkness, illuminating the center of the room.
