Chapter 5 - Locked In

The heavy deadbolt clicked into place with a definitive, metallic finality that reverberated through the vast dining room like a gunshot. Julian spun around, abandoning the table and striding furiously toward the double doors. He grabbed the heavy brass handle and threw his weight against it, but the door refused to budge. It was locked from the outside by a mechanism that required a master security code—a code that only one other person in the entire estate possessed.

"Arthur," Julian growled, slamming his palm flat against the solid wood. He reached into his suit jacket for his smartphone, pulling it out with frantic movements, only to stare down at a completely blank, unresponsive screen. The battery hadn't died; the device had been remotely wiped. A tiny blinking red light on the ceiling molding caught his attention. He looked up to find a sleek, newly installed pinhole camera humming softly behind the decorative plasterwork, transmitting every word, every tear, and every revelation straight to the man controlling their fate.

"He's been watching us all evening," Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper as she joined him by the entryway. The three small children shrank back against the wall, sensing the trap closing around them. Marcus stood frozen near the table, clutching a silver fork in his small hand as if it could somehow protect him from the invisible threat closing in.

"Dad, what's happening?" Marcus cried out, his voice cracking with panic as he ran toward Julian. "Why won't the doors open? Who is Arthur?"

Julian scooped his son up into his arms, holding the boy tightly against his chest while his mind raced through a dozen desperate escape routes. The windows on the ground floor were reinforced with ballistic glass, installed years ago at Uncle Arthur’s "suggestion" for security purposes. The estate’s private security detail, men Julian paid a king's ransom to protect his family, hadn't raised an alarm. That meant they were either compromised, neutralized, or taking direct orders from Arthur himself.

"Listen to me, Marcus," Julian said, forcing a calm into his voice that he was far from feeling. "Look at me. Everything is going to be alright. Dad's got you."

"You can't protect us this time, Julian," Elena said, her eyes fixed on the smart-home control panel embedded in the nearby wall.

The screen on the panel suddenly flickered to life, the high-definition display glowing with a harsh, flickering blue light. A live camera feed appeared, showing the sprawling front gates of the mansion. A sleek, black armored sedan had pulled right up to the wrought-iron barrier, its high-beams cutting blinding paths through the foggy night air. A figure stepped out from the passenger side, walking with a familiar, deliberate limp that made Julian’s blood run cold.

"He's here," Elena breathed, her hand flying to her mouth.

The audio speaker on the wall panel crackled with static, and then a raspy, elderly voice filled the silent dining room, dripping with amused malice.

"Open the door, my boy," Uncle Arthur's voice purred through the intercom. "We have family business to finish."
