Chapter 9 - The Ghostly Text

The high-priority notification buzzed against Evelyn’s palm like a trapped insect. She paused at the threshold of the grand library, the chaotic shouting of federal agents subduing the tactical operative fading into a dull background hum. With calculated slowness, she lifted her phone, her thumb swiping across the screen to reveal the encrypted message.
The sender was completely masked, routing through a triple-proxy server designed to bypass standard digital forensics. Yet, the words displayed on the glowing screen cut straight through her carefully constructed armor of absolute control.
Do you remember the penthouse, Evelyn?
Beneath the haunting question lay a single GPS coordinate, pinpointing a luxury residential high-rise downtown—a building that had officially been condemned and sealed following a mysterious fire six years ago. The very same fire that had claimed the life of her younger brother, Thomas, before Donald and his corporate syndicate rose to unchecked power.
Evelyn’s breath hitched, the only physical betrayal of her otherwise icy composure. Her grip on the brass candlestick tightened until her knuckles turned white. For years, Donald had sworn that Thomas’s death was an accidental electrical fault, a tragic domestic mishap tied to faulty wiring in the old development portfolio. But the timing of this message, arriving precisely as the offshore syndicate collapsed, stripped away the comforting illusion of coincidence.
Behind her, the federal team secured the operative, leading him out in heavy flex-cuffs. Arthur hurried into the library, panting slightly, his face etched with lingering adrenaline as he sought out Evelyn’s guidance.
"Evelyn," Arthur called out, stopping a few feet away. "The feds have secured the Zurich node. They're saying the entire network of shell companies is collapsing in real time. Donald’s associates are burning documents across three continents. It’s a total rout."
Evelyn didn't turn around immediately. She locked the screen of her phone, letting it slide back into the deep pocket of her high-neck black dress. She adjusted her posture, regaining every ounce of her chilling authority before slowly turning to face the trembling investor.
"The routing of the collapse was never in doubt, Arthur," Evelyn replied, her voice steady and controlled, though a razor-sharp edge lingered beneath her words. "The financial architecture was flawed from its inception. Donald was simply too arrogant to read his own blueprints."
Arthur wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, looking around the high-tech devastation of the library. "Then it’s over. We survived the worst of it."
"No, Arthur," Evelyn corrected softly, her dark eyes narrowing with sudden, lethal intent. "The financial war is over. The reckoning for the blood debt has only just begun."
Arthur frowned, stepping closer. "What are you talking about? What blood debt?"
Before Evelyn could answer, the distant wail of sirens cut through the metropolitan rain outside, growing rapidly louder as multiple emergency vehicles converged on the estate. But Evelyn’s mind was no longer in the mansion. It was locked onto the coordinates glowing on her hidden phone screen—coordinates pointing straight toward a ghost from her past that Donald had tried to bury forever.
"Take charge of the remaining assets, Arthur," Evelyn commanded, her tone brooking no argument as she began to walk past him toward the private exit leading to the subterranean garages. "If anyone asks for me, tell them I have gone to collect the final dividend."
Arthur stared after her, paralyzed by the unmistakable danger radiating from her every movement. "Evelyn, wait! Where are you going?"

Evelyn didn't slow down. Her heels clicked rhythmically against the hardwood floor as she stepped into the cool, shadowed foyer, slipping seamlessly out into the stormy night.
