Chapter 3 - The Collateral Damage

The sharp buzz of Donald’s phone acted as a starting pistol for chaos. Across the mahogany table, the elite investors—men and women who had spent the evening sipping vintage wine and laughing at Donald’s hollow jokes—instantly pulled out their own devices. Within seconds, the formal dining room erupted into a discordant symphony of electronic chimes, gasps of disbelief, and frantic whispered phone calls.

Donald stood up so abruptly that his heavy mahogany chair tipped backward, crashing loudly against the hardwood floor. He ignored the echoing thump, his face draining of all remaining color as he watched his most loyal board members stare at their screens in absolute horror. The illusion of his invincibility had shattered into a thousand jagged pieces, leaving him exposed and utterly defenseless.

"Everyone, please," Donald stammered, raising a trembling hand toward the investors. "This is a temporary technical glitch. Our legal team is already addressing the clearinghouse delay. Do not make any rash decisions based on a domestic dispute."

No one looked at him. The blonde woman in the silver sequin dress had retreated all the way to the arched windows, wrapping her arms tightly around herself as if shielding against an incoming storm. She watched Donald with a mixture of disgust and profound betrayal, realizing instantly that his sinking ship would drag anyone tethered to him down into the murky depths.

Evelyn remained completely motionless at the head of the secondary sideboard. She didn't flinch at the falling chair, nor did she blink at Donald’s frantic pleas. She simply adjusted the stack of incriminating papers, her fingers resting gently next to the large sparkling diamond ring. She looked like a queen surveying a conquered province that had surrendered without a single drop of royal blood being spilled.

"Technical glitch?" Evelyn repeated, her tone dripping with quiet mockery. She turned her head slightly to address the trembling senior partner standing nearest to her. "Ask him about the Cayman subsidiary, Arthur. Ask him where the third-quarter capital injection for the Pacific real estate portfolio actually went."

Arthur, a gray-haired veteran of high-stakes venture capitalism, slowly lowered his phone. His expression transformed from confusion to raw, incandescent rage. He glared at Donald across the length of the polished table.

"You drained the Pacific reserves?" Arthur roared, stepping forward. "That was pension fund money, Donald! That was our primary security backing!"

Donald stumbled backward, his heel catching the edge of the fallen chair. He managed to keep his balance, but his eyes darted wildly around the room as a dozen powerful allies turned into hostile executioners in a matter of seconds. The golden boy of the corporate world had finally been exposed as a common thief.

"It was a calculated risk," Donald babbled, sweat beading along his hairline, ruining the immaculate styling of his slicked-back dark hair. "The returns were supposed to cover the deficit before the audit cycle."

"The audit cycle isn't next month, Donald," Evelyn stated calmly, picking up the diamond ring and letting the light refract off its flawless cuts. "It’s tonight. And I submitted the final reconciliation report to federal regulators precisely four minutes ago."

Donald froze, his breath catching permanently in his throat. He stared at Evelyn in sheer, paralyzingly terror as the heavy mahogany double doors at the far end of the hall suddenly swung open with a resounding bang.
