Chapter 5 - The Vanishing Act

The metallic snap of the handcuffs echoing through the mahogany-paneled dining room broke the final thread of Donald’s composure. He let out a ragged, humiliated gasp as the federal agents firmly gripped his arms, steering him away from the wreckage of his former life. He didn't fight back; the sheer weight of absolute defeat had drained every ounce of fight from his bones.
As they marched him past the rows of stunned, silent dignitaries, Donald desperately scanned the crowd for a single sympathetic face. There was none. The blonde woman in the silver sequin dress had already slipped away, ducking quietly through a side service exit to distance herself permanently from the sinking wreckage. The elite investors stared at the floor, avoiding his desperate gaze as if looking at him would somehow contaminate their own reputations.
Evelyn watched the procession with an unblinking, statuesque composure. Her dark hair in its sleek updo remained immaculate, and her high-neck black dress absorbed the warm amber lighting, making her appear like an untouchable phantom of vengeance. She did not move a muscle as Donald was led past the secondary sideboard, his navy blue suit rumpled and his slicked-back hair falling out of place over his damp forehead.
Just as the agents reached the threshold of the double doors, Donald managed to twist his head back toward her, his face twisted in a mask of bitter, unhinged desperation.
"You think you’ve won, Evelyn!" Donald screamed, his voice cracking violently against the wood-paneled walls. "You think those files are the end of it? There are things you don't know! Names you haven't seen! When the offshore boards realize what you've unlocked, they won't just ruin me—they’ll come for you too!"
The lead agent gave his arm a sharp, authoritative jerk, silencing his outburst and dragging him out into the dimly lit corridor beyond. The heavy mahogany doors swung shut with a muffled thud, cutting off Donald’s frantic rant and plunging the dining room back into an eerie, suffocating quiet.
Arthur, the gray-haired senior investor, slowly stepped away from the table, his face pale and lined with stress. He approached Evelyn with cautious steps, his hands trembling slightly as he clutched his phone.
"Evelyn," Arthur began, his voice laced with a mixture of fear and profound respect. "If what he said about the offshore boards has any truth to it... we are all standing on unstable ground. Those aren't just corporate entities; those are dangerous syndicates."
Evelyn turned her head slowly, fixing Arthur with a sharp, intimidating gaze that made the veteran investor take an involuntary half-step backward. She reached down and picked up the large sparkling diamond ring, sliding it effortlessly back onto her left ring finger. The gem caught the chandelier light, flashing a brilliant, cold fire.
"Let them come, Arthur," Evelyn replied evenly, her voice dropping an octave into a register of chilling absolute certainty. "I didn't open those accounts blindly. I left a trap inside the main ledger, and the trigger is already set."
Arthur swallowed hard, staring at her with wide eyes. "What kind of trap?"
May you like
Evelyn offered a slow, razor-sharp smile that didn't reach her eyes. Before she could answer, every single light in the grand mansion suddenly flickered violently and died, plunging the entire estate into pitch blackness.
