Chapter 4 - The Unwelcome Auditors

The heavy mahogany double doors crashed against the wood-paneled walls with a terrifying finality. The rhythmic tapping of metropolitan rain outside was suddenly overshadowed by the heavy, synchronized thud of leather-soled shoes marching across the outer foyer. A chilling hush fell instantly over the dining room, freezing the panicked investors mid-sentence.

Two men in charcoal federal suits strode into the amber-lit space, their expressions carved from unrelenting granite. They didn't look at the crystal glassware, the expensive floral arrangements, or the terrified dignitaries shrinking away from their path. Their sights were locked onto one man alone.

Donald stood paralyzed near the overturned chair, his chest heaving under his dark suit jacket. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound escaped. The federal agents bypassed the weeping blonde in the silver sequin dress and stopped directly in front of Donald, creating an impassable barrier between him and the rest of the world.

"Donald Vance?" the lead agent asked, his voice flat, professional, and entirely devoid of human warmth. "You are formally served with a federal asset freezing order and a warrant for your immediate questioning regarding international wire fraud, embezzlement, and securities tampering."

The words hung in the suffocating air like falling guillotines. Donald swayed slightly on his feet, his hands twitching uselessly at his sides. The glittering empire he had spent two decades building, lying, and stealing to construct had vanished into smoke within a span of ten minutes.

Across the room, Evelyn watched the proceedings with cold, clinical detachment. She did not smile. She did not gloat. She simply placed the large sparkling diamond ring back onto the center of the financial dossiers, letting it sit there like a gravestone marker for a dead marriage and a ruined career.

"There must be some mistake," Donald whispered, his voice cracking pitifully. He looked desperately toward the investors who had backed him for years, but every single face had turned away in disgust. "My legal counsel—"

"Your legal counsel resigned three minutes ago, Mr. Vance," the second agent interrupted smoothly, stepping forward to retrieve a pair of metallic cuffs from his belt. "Along with every corporate officer listed on your primary shell entities. Your accounts are zeroed out. Your passports have been flagged."

Donald’s eyes darted frantically across the room until they found Evelyn again. There was a desperate, pleading agony in his gaze—a pathetic silent prayer for mercy from the woman he had underestimated, manipulated, and ultimately betrayed. He took a jerky step forward, his hands lifting instinctively.

"Evelyn," he choked out, ignoring the agents closing in beside him. "Please. We can fix this. Talk to them. Tell them it’s a family misunderstanding. We built this together."

Evelyn turned her head slowly, her dark hair immaculate in its sleek updo, refusing to grant him even the dignity of direct eye contact. She smoothed the high-neck of her black dress with deliberate slowness, her large pearl drop earrings swaying with quiet elegance.

"We didn't build anything together, Donald," Evelyn said softly, her voice carrying easily across the silent, tense room. "You built a cage of deceit. I merely provided the key."

Before Donald could utter another plea, the cold steel of the handcuffs snapped firmly around his wrists with a sharp, metallic click that echoed like a gunshot through the opulent hall.
