Chapter 6 - Darkness in the Estate

The sudden, absolute darkness swallowed the opulent dining room whole. The warm amber illumination vanished instantly, leaving only the pale, flickering glow of metropolitan lightning flashing frantically through the tall arched windows. The crystal glassware on the banquet tables cast jagged, shivering shadows across the wooden paneling as torrential rain continued to lash against the glass.
A collective intake of breath echoed through the shadows as the elite dignitaries panicked in the sudden gloom. Footsteps scraped nervously against the hardwood floor, and the hum of the climate control units sputtered and died, leaving a heavy, suffocating stillness in the air.
"Stay where you are," Evelyn’s voice cut through the darkness like a razor blade. It was devoid of fear, carrying an eerie, absolute command that immediately froze the panicking investors in their tracks.
Standing at the head of the secondary sideboard, Evelyn did not flinch. In the split-second flashes of lightning, the large sparkling diamond ring on her finger caught the harsh white illumination, glowing like a beacon of cold defiance. She reached out with her left hand, feeling along the smooth mahogany surface until her fingers located a heavy, antique brass candlestick with a half-burned taper.
With practiced calm, she extracted a gold-plated lighter from the pocket of her high-neck black dress. A small blue flame flickered to life, casting a stark, dramatic halo across the sharp angles of her jaw and the luminous pearl drop earrings resting against her cool skin. She touched the flame to the wick, and a warm, steady circle of light bloomed around her, pushing back the shadows just enough to reveal her untouchable composure.
"Emergency generators should have kicked in instantly," Arthur said from somewhere to her left, his voice tight with rising panic. He stepped into the halo of candlelight, his silhouette tense. "The entire estate’s grid is hardwired for redundant failure. This wasn't a standard blackout."
Evelyn watched the flame steady itself, her dark eyes reflecting the tiny fire. "It wasn't a technical failure, Arthur. It was a manual override."
"From who?" Arthur demanded, his eyes darting toward the distant double doors leading to the main foyer. "Donald is already in federal custody. Who else could possibly lock down the property?"
Evelyn did not answer immediately. She slowly turned her head, looking past Arthur toward the dark expanse of the hallway. Her mind raced through the complex corporate structures she had spent the last six months mapping out in secret. Donald was a frontman—a loud, arrogant pawn playing a high-stakes game with other people’s money. But the real power behind the shell corporations, the silent partners who funded the failed deals and hidden accounts, operated in the shadows. And they had just realized their primary vault had been compromised.
"Someone who knows that the federal indictment is only the surface," Evelyn stated quietly, her voice chillingly calm. "Someone who realizes that the physical files on this table represent a threat to their entire operation."
Before Arthur could process the warning, a faint, metallic click echoed from the far end of the dark dining room—the sound of a heavy service door unlatching from the outside.
Evelyn slowly lifted the brass candlestick, stepping away from the sideboard.
"Arthur," she whispered sharply, her gaze locked on the black void of the doorway. "Get the investors into the walk-in cellar behind the pantry. Now."
"And you?" Arthur asked, his voice trembling.
May you like
Evelyn raised her left hand, letting the diamond ring catch the candlelight, her expression hardening into absolute ice. "I am going to welcome our uninvited guests."
