Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Ambush

The vaulted ceilings of the federal courthouse echoed with the muffled murmurs of reporters, attorneys, and spectators scrambling to fill the gallery. Morning light streamed through towering stained-glass windows, casting amber and azure patterns across the polished mahogany benches. Elena strode through the double doors flanked by David and Thomas, her dark blazer buttoned tight, her face a mask of absolute, unyielding resolve.

They took their seats at the defense table just as Judge Harrison—a severe, sharp-eyed woman with silver hair pulled into a severe bun—entered the chamber. The bailiff banged his gavel once.

"All rise for the United States District Court," the bailiff commanded.

They sat in unison. Judge Harrison scanned the packed courtroom before resting her piercing gaze on the two opposing legal teams. On the opposite side of the aisle sat Evelyn, flanked by high-priced corporate litigators, looking entirely serene in her beige jacket and red turtleneck.

"We are here to resolve Case Number 44-B: The State versus Elena Sterling et al., concerning asset ownership and emergency child custody," Judge Harrison began, her voice carrying effortlessly across the silent room. "Before we address the criminal fraud allegations, I have received a priority petition from the respondent, Ms. Evelyn Vance."

Evelyn’s lead counsel stood up, smoothing his tie. "Your Honor, our petition is straightforward. The corporate assets in question were never legally acquired by the Sterling family trust. They were held in escrow under a conditional generational clause signed thirty years ago by Elena Sterling’s late adoptive father—a clause that explicitly reverts all holdings to the Vance lineage in the event of corporate insolvency or managerial negligence."

Elena shot to her feet before her own attorney could pull her back down. "That is entirely false! My father purchased those assets free and clear through standard bankruptcy liquidation proceedings."

"Sit down, Ms. Sterling," Judge Harrison commanded, her tone dropping the room’s temperature by ten degrees. "You will speak through counsel or when recognized by the bench."

Elena sank slowly back into her chair, her hands clenched into white-knuckled fists under the mahogany table.

"Proceed, counsel," Judge Harrison instructed Evelyn's lawyer.

The attorney smiled smugly, sliding a yellowed parchment document toward the judge’s clerk. "Furthermore, Your Honor, regarding the matter of emergency child custody: genetic verification protocols confirm that the infant in question is not biologically related to Ms. Sterling through adoption or natural birth, but is, in fact, the sole biological descendant of the Vance bloodline via a confidential surrogacy agreement executed prior to the corporate merger."

The courtroom erupted into a collective gasp. David grabbed Elena’s arm, his face pale with shock. "Elena... what is he talking about? That baby’s birth certificate lists you as the mother."

Elena didn't answer. She stared across the aisle at Evelyn, who turned her head slightly and met Elena’s gaze with a terrifying, triumphant smirk.

"Based on these verified documents," Judge Harrison announced, picking up her gavel, "this court hereby orders the immediate transfer of all corporate accounts, the estate property, and emergency custody of the child to Evelyn Vance, pending full trial."
