Chapter 2 - The Echo in the Hallway

The heavy oak door settled into its frame with a dull, final thud that reverberated through the quiet house. Elena stood frozen in the entryway, the infant in her arms shifting with a soft, sleepy sigh. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, but she forced her breathing to remain slow and deliberate. Across the living room, David and Thomas exchanged a cautious look near the sunlit window, their professional detachment failing under the weight of the morning's confrontation.
"Elena," David said, his voice low and hesitant as he took a cautious step toward the hall. "Are you alright? What did she mean about the locks?"
"She means she planned this," Elena said, her voice tight and devoid of warmth. She clutched the duffel bag tighter, her knuckles turning white against the canvas. "Evelyn didn't just show up to review a custody schedule. She had access. Real access. How did she get the security codes changed without my authorization?"
Thomas crossed his arms, his brow furrowing deeply. "That's impossible unless someone on the management side of the estate gave her clearance. The master override requires legal documentation or a verified family signature. Did you sign anything during the mediation last week?"
"Of course not," Elena snapped, turning her gaze sharply toward them. "You know every paper that crossed my desk. We reviewed every clause together."
"Then we need to check the network logs," David murmured, already pulling his phone from his blazer pocket. "If she bypassed the smart lock system, there's a digital footprint."
Elena walked slowly toward the kitchen, setting the duffel bag onto the quartz island. She transferred the baby carefully into the padded infant seat, ensuring the straps were secure before turning back to the papers Evelyn had left behind. As she sifted through the printed calendar pages, a cold sweat broke out across the back of her neck. These weren't just standard visitation schedules. They were financial ledger printouts, detailing wire transfers originating from an account she hadn't recognized in months.
"Look at this," Elena whispered, holding up a single sheet of paper.
David and Thomas hurried over, leaning across the white marble surface. Thomas adjusted his glasses, his eyes scanning the rows of numbers and routing codes. "These aren't custody logs, Elena. This is a property deed transfer."
"Property deed?" Elena repeated, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "This house is entirely in my name. My firm acquired it before the marriage even began."

"Not anymore," David said, pointing a steady finger at the bottom signature line. "Look at the notary stamp date. It was filed three hours ago."
