Chapter 13 - The Countdown to Midnight

The digital timer on the central monitor blinked down in stark, unforgiving white numerals: 14:42... 14:41...

The harsh white light flooded the subterranean server room, casting harsh shadows across Robert’s scarred face. Inside the glass enclosure, he typed furiously into the master console, initiating the final boot sequence for the biological synchronization protocol.

"We need to break this glass," David said urgently, grabbing a heavy steel maintenance wrench from a wall rack near the corridor entrance and swinging it hard against the reinforced partition.

The heavy metal tool struck the glass with a deafening crash, but the surface didn't even scratch. It was multilayered ballistic laminate, designed to withstand high-velocity impacts.

"Don't waste your energy, David," Robert said smoothly through the intercom, not even looking up from his keyboard. "That partition is rated to withstand a low-yield explosive charge. You aren't breaking through."

Elena didn't panic. Her breathing remained slow and measured, her professional instincts overriding the rising tide of panic. She stepped up to the glass partition, placing her palm flat against the cool surface directly opposite Robert.

"Where is she, Robert?" Elena asked, her voice steady and commanding. "Where is Evelyn holding the baby?"

Robert paused his typing, looking up through the glass to meet her gaze. A flicker of genuine familial curiosity crossed his scarred features. "You still don't understand, do you, Elena? Evelyn isn't holding the child hostage. She brought her right down here twenty minutes ago. The synchronization protocol requires the biological parent and the child to be physically present at the core terminal simultaneously."

Elena’s blood ran cold. "She’s in the server room with you?"

As if on cue, a side door inside the glass enclosure clicked open. Evelyn stepped out from the shadows near the back of the server racks, wearing her sharp black trench coat, cradling the sleeping infant securely in her arms. She walked slowly toward the glass partition, stopping just a few feet away from where Elena stood on the outside.

Evelyn looked down at the baby, then raised her eyes to meet Elena’s through the glass. There was no malice in her expression now—only an eerie, resolute calm.

"She's sleeping peacefully, Elena," Evelyn said softly, her voice carrying through the intercom channel. "She doesn't feel the weight of what we're building. She's just part of the architecture now."

"Hand her over, Evelyn," Elena whispered, her voice cracking slightly as she pressed her forehead against the glass. "You can have the company. You can have the house, the money, the estate—everything. Just let the child go."

Evelyn shook her head slowly, her blonde hair catching the harsh white light of the monitor. "You still think this is about property, Elena. The foundation can't stand without its true anchor. And neither can we."

The countdown timer on the screen suddenly flashed red: 05:00 minutes remaining.
