Chapter 10 - The Secret Inheritance

The gavel struck the sounding block with a sharp, definitive crack that sealed the courtroom’s fate, yet the echo seemed to linger in Elena’s ears like a low, persistent hum. The gallery buzzed with frantic whispers as the media crews scrambled toward the aisles to capture Evelyn’s triumphant exit. Elena remained anchored to her chair at the defense table, the legal defeat washing over her not as a shock, but as a chilling confirmation of a much deeper conspiracy.

"We can appeal the emergency injunction," Thomas whispered urgently, his fingers flying across his tablet as he drafted a motion for stay. "The surrogacy contract they presented must have been forged. We can subpoena the medical clinic’s original database."

"There is no medical clinic, Thomas," Elena said, her voice eerily calm as she stared straight ahead at the empty judicial bench. "At least, not one that exists on paper today. Evelyn didn't just forge a contract; she created an entirely parallel legal identity system thirty years ago."

David leaned in close, his brow furrowed with concern. "Elena, you need to pull yourself together. We just lost the house, the company, and the baby in less than twelve hours. We need a tactical retreat."

"No," Elena said, standing up slowly and buttoning her blazer. "We don't retreat. We follow her to the source."

"What source?" David asked.

"The estate," Elena replied, grabbing her leather briefcase. "Evelyn didn't win this case in a courtroom today. She won it thirty years ago in the foundation of that house. The hidden safe in the basement wasn't holding corporate documents—it was holding the original ledgers of the Vance family trust before they faked their own bankruptcy."

Thirty minutes later, Elena, David, and Thomas bypassed the police perimeter tape using a secondary maintenance access road Arthur had quietly whispered about before being detained. They slipped through the overgrown rear garden of the estate, keeping low beneath the sprawling oak trees that lined the property’s perimeter.

The smart home system was still offline due to the severed fiber line, plunging the exterior into deep, natural shadows. They crept toward the French doors leading into the sunlit kitchen where the nightmare had begun that very morning.

David tested the handle of the French doors. To their surprise, it turned smoothly with a soft click. Evelyn hadn't bothered to secure the manual locks from the inside, fully believing she had won absolute dominion over the property.

They stepped quietly into the dark kitchen. The quartz countertops gleamed faintly under the moonlight pouring through the windows. Elena walked straight toward the pantry door, passing the white kitchen island where the calendar papers still lay scattered.

"What are you looking for?" Thomas asked, clicking on a small penlight.

"The pantry floor," Elena said, dropping to her knees and pressing her palms against the wooden baseboards. "My father always said this house was built over a smuggler's cellar from the Prohibition era. The modern blueprints only show what's on top."

She pushed against the left corner panel. With a satisfying mechanical click, the entire pantry floor panel slid sideways, revealing a narrow, vertical service shaft plunging downward into total blackness, illuminated only by a faint, pulsing red glow coming from deep below.
