Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the System

The digital clock on the microwave blinked in stark, neon red, casting long shadows across the pristine kitchen surfaces. Elena stared at the forged notary stamp, her mind racing to connect the impossible dots of a bureaucracy moving faster than humanly possible. Legal transfers required weeks, sometimes months, of hearings, witness verifications, and judicial oversight. Yet here was an official state seal timestamped just minutes before Evelyn walked through the front door.

"This is identity fraud," Elena said, her voice trembling slightly as she reached for her phone. "I’m calling the district attorney's office directly. I’m not waiting for local precinct protocols."

"Wait, Elena—don't dial yet," Thomas cautioned, reaching out to gently press his hand over the top of her phone. "Look at the routing number on the bottom of the page. It’s tied to the Swiss holding firm that handles your company’s primary venture capital accounts."

Elena froze, her finger hovering above the screen. "That’s impossible. Those accounts are locked behind dual-authentication protocols that only I and the senior board members can access."

"Or someone who retained administrative master privileges from the merger three years ago," David added grimly, walking over to the kitchen island to inspect the document more closely. "When you integrated Evelyn's tech startup into your portfolio, did you ever formally revoke her corporate system credentials?"

A sudden, sickening realization washed over Elena. In the flurry of corporate restructuring and personal upheaval that had marked the end of her marriage, she had trusted the standard compliance checklists. She had assumed the legal separation agreement handled the digital uncoupling. She had never checked the backend server permissions.

"She didn't just hack the house," Elena whispered, staring blankly at the marble countertop. "She locked me out of my own company."

"Try pulling up your email," Thomas suggested urgently, pulling his own laptop from his leather briefcase and flipping it open. "Let's see if your corporate domain is still active."

Elena unlocked her phone with shaking fingers and tapped the mail application. The screen spun for a fraction of a second before flashing a stark, uncompromising red banner across the top: Account Suspended. Contact System Administrator. Beneath the warning, a single notification popped up, displaying a newly assigned administrator name: Evelyn Vance.

Before Elena could utter a word, the home's smart speaker on the kitchen wall suddenly chimed, its glowing blue ring pulsing rhythmically in the quiet room.

"Good morning, Elena," the synthesized voice echoed smoothly through the house. "Your personal assets have been successfully reallocated. Please vacate the premises by noon."
