Chapter 14 - The Final Synchronization

The digital timer on the central monitor glared in ominous red digits: 02:15... 02:14...
The hum of the massive cooling units rose to a deafening pitch, vibrating through the concrete floor and rattling the metal casings of the server racks. Inside the glass enclosure, Evelyn stood motionless beside Robert, holding the sleeping infant against her chest while the biometric scanner on the main console emitted a rhythmic, pulsing blue light.
"Protocol ready," a synthesized voice announced from the room's overhead speakers. "Awaiting final biometric verification."
David continued hammering frantically against the ballistic glass with the heavy steel wrench, his shoulders burning with exhaustion, but the partition didn't even fracture. Thomas was kneeling by the corridor's floor junction box, his fingers tearing away insulation tape as he tried to wire-tap the manual override switch.
"Elena, I'm bypassing the master relay," Thomas shouted over the roar of the cooling fans. "I can cut the main power grid to the server, but it will trigger an automatic system purge. Everything—all the data, all the ledgers—will be wiped clean in three seconds."
"Do it," Elena commanded without hesitation, her eyes locked on Evelyn through the glass.
"Wait," Evelyn said suddenly, stepping closer to the partition and pressing her hand against the glass opposite Elena’s. Her voice wasn't cold anymore; it carried a desperate, urgent plea. "If you purge the system, Elena, the foundation collapses. Not just our wealth—everything tied to the Vance trust, including the clean corporate assets that fund your entire philanthropic portfolio. You'll destroy your own legacy."
"My legacy isn't built on stolen blood and stolen lives," Elena answered, her voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable conviction. "I built my life on my own terms, Evelyn. You can keep your empire."
Robert stepped forward, his face twisting into an ugly snarl of panic. "Don't listen to her, Evelyn! Execute the sync! We are fifty seconds away from total immunity!"
Evelyn looked down at the infant in her arms, then back up at Elena through the glass. A micro-expression of profound clarity flashed across her face—the realization that the empire her father built was a prison, not a legacy.
With a sudden, decisive movement, Evelyn turned away from the console, walked over to the secure emergency exit hatch inside the glass room, and slammed her palm against the manual release button. The heavy interior door popped open with a loud pneumatic hiss.
"Take her!" Evelyn shouted, thrusting the infant carrier through the open doorway toward Elena and David just as Robert lunged forward to grab her arm.

Thomas slammed his wire-cutters down onto the primary relay cables in the hallway floor. A blinding flash of white light erupted from the server racks, accompanied by a deafening electrical pop, and the entire subterranean facility plunged into absolute, pitch-black silence.
