Chapter 6 - The Hidden Passenger

The state trooper’s flashlight beam illuminated a small, bloodstained canvas duffel bag tucked awkwardly beneath Clara’s legs in the footwell of the truck. Arthur stared at it in absolute confusion. He had helped Clara out of the folding chair by the wooden fence, but she had certainly not been carrying any bag.

“Whose bag is that?” the trooper demanded, his hand hovering over his radio as he stepped closer to the open back door.

Clara opened her eyes, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as she gasped for air. “It... it wasn’t mine. When we were sitting in the field... before the truck pulled up... someone threw it over the wooden fence.”

Arthur’s mind raced, trying to piece together the surreal sequence of events that had led them from the quiet pasture to this terrifying highway shoulder. “Officer, I swear to you, we didn't know that bag was there. We were just trying to escape the heat and find a ride.”

The trooper didn't look convinced. He unlatched the heavy-duty zipper of the canvas duffel bag with a gloved hand, pulling it open just a few inches. A harsh glare of emerald green light spilled out from the interior, reflecting off the trooper’s sunglasses.

Inside the bag sat neat, vacuum-sealed stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills, alongside a sleek, military-grade satellite phone that was currently blinking a steady, rhythmic blue light.

“Step away from the vehicle, both of you,” the trooper ordered sharply, drawing his sidearm and taking a tactical step back. “We’ve got cash transport bags matching an armed bank robbery in the next county over. This isn’t a routine medical transport.”

Arthur threw his hands up in the air, his voice cracking with sheer panic. “Are you insane?! My daughter is in active labor! She needs a doctor, not an interrogation!”

“Dad...” Clara whimpered, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. “The baby... I think the baby is coming right now.”

The trooper looked torn, his eyes darting between the armed robbery contraband in the back seat and Clara’s obvious medical distress. Before he could make a decision, the distinctive chop of helicopter blades cut through the sky above them. A red and white medical evacuation chopper dropped rapidly toward the highway, kicking up a massive cloud of dust and loose gravel.

From inside the locked police cruiser, Marcus began banging his head rhythmically against the rear window, laughing maniacally as he watched the chaos unfold through the glass.

The trooper keyed his radio. “Medevac unit, abort landing! We have an unverified bio-hazard and criminal evidence on scene!”

Arthur lunged toward the back door of the truck, shielding Clara with his own body. “You touch her, and I swear I’ll tear this highway apart!”
