Chapter 5 - The Police Interception

Before Arthur could tighten his grip on Marcus’s collar, the blinding flash of red and blue emergency lights filled the truck’s cab. A heavy bass thrum vibrated through the floorboards as a state patrol cruiser pulled in diagonally behind them, blocking any attempt to reverse.

Marcus slowly raised his hands, a calm, practiced smirk still playing on his lips. “Well, look at that. You didn't just cut the stream, Arthur. You triggered the panic protocol.”

Arthur released his grip, panting heavily as he pushed himself back into the passenger seat. Through the rearview mirror, he watched a towering state trooper step out of the cruiser, hand resting casually on the holster of his service weapon, stepping carefully around the gravel shoulder.

“Keep your hands where I can see them!” the trooper’s amplified voice boomed from the cruiser’s external speaker, cutting through the hum of the idling engine.

Marcus rolled his window all the way down, offering the officer a disarming, polite wave. “Officer, thank goodness. We have a medical emergency in the back. Pregnant woman, crowning fast. I was just rushing them to St. Jude’s.”

The trooper approached the driver’s side, shining a heavy-duty flashlight directly into Marcus’s eyes, then panning it across Arthur’s terrified face. The beam swept into the back seat, illuminating Clara as another contraction wracked her frail body.

“Sir, step out of the vehicle, slowly,” the trooper commanded, his hand tightening on his holster. “We received multiple frantic 911 calls reporting a kidnapping and an extortion broadcast originating from this exact vehicle license plate.”

Arthur shoved his door open, stumbling out onto the sun-baked asphalt. “Officer, listen to me! My daughter is dying! He held us hostage for money and online clout!”

Marcus didn't resist as the trooper motioned him out of the truck, pressing him against the side door to pat him down. “He’s delusional, officer. Look at my phone dashcam footage. It’s all recorded. I stopped to help them out of the goodness of my heart.”

The trooper cuffed Marcus with practiced efficiency, locking him securely in the back of the cruiser before rushing over to the passenger side of the pickup. He peered inside at Clara, his professional demeanor instantly cracking as he realized the severity of the situation.

“Dispatch, we need an emergency medical chopper at mile marker forty-four, now!” the trooper yelled into his shoulder radio. He turned to Arthur, his face pale. “Sir... where is the placenta? Is she bleeding internally?”

Arthur froze, his heart stopping as he looked into the back seat and noticed a small, stained bundle hidden beneath Clara’s jacket that neither he nor Marcus had seen before.
