Chapter 12 - The Hospital Escape

The rain began to lash violently against the reinforced windows of the county hospital’s psychiatric ward, casting erratic shadows across the sterile white walls. Arthur huddled in the corner of the small visitor’s lounge, clutching a paper cup of lukewarm water that he hadn't touched. Detective Miller had kept her word—at least for now. Clara had been released from strict confinement and placed into an unlisted recovery room on the third floor, away from the prying eyes of the press.
A soft click echoed down the hallway as the heavy security door opened. Miller walked in, shaking the rain from her trench coat, her face pale and taut with anxiety.
“We don’t have much time, Arthur,” Miller said, keeping her voice low as she pulled up a chair beside him. “I ran the cryptographic hash of the serial number you gave me from the drive. It’s not just a bank robbery ledger. It’s a dead-man’s switch linked to an encrypted broadcast protocol.”
Arthur looked up, his eyes bloodshot and exhausted. “What does that mean for Clara?”
“It means Julian Thorne isn't just trying to recover his money—he’s trying to erase the witnesses,” Miller said grimly, pulling a set of civilian clothes out of a canvas tote bag. “We need to get her out of this hospital immediately. A tactical team tied to Thorne’s security contractor just cleared the front lobby security desk under the guise of a federal transfer.”
Arthur stood up so fast his chair screeched against the linoleum floor. “Then let’s go! What are we waiting for?”
“We use the service stairs,” Miller commanded, handing Arthur the bag of clothes. “Change her into these. I’ll meet you by the loading dock in three minutes. Keep your head down and don’t talk to anyone in the corridors.”
Arthur hurried down the quiet, dimly lit hallway until he reached room 312. He pushed the heavy wooden door open cautiously. Clara was sitting up in the hospital bed, her face drained of all color, staring blankly out the rain-streaked window at the dark parking lot below.
“Clara,” Arthur breathed, rushing to her side and grasping her cold hand. “We have to go. Right now.”
Clara turned her head slowly, her eyes hollow and haunted. “Dad... I didn't have a baby, did I?”
Arthur’s heart broke all over again, but he forced a reassuring smile to his face, blinking back fresh tears. “No, sweetheart. But you’re going to be okay. We’re getting out of here.”
He quickly helped her change out of the hospital gown into the oversized hoodie and sweatpants Miller had provided. As Clara slid her feet into her sneakers, a soft chime echoed from the corner of the room.
Arthur froze. Sitting on the bedside table was Clara’s old smartphone, which had been powered off and placed in an evidence bag. The screen had suddenly lit up on its own, displaying a single, flashing push notification from an unknown sender.

Arthur leaned over and read the glowing text aloud: “Nice try, Detective Miller. But the building is already surrounded.”
