Chapter 2 - The Digital Tsunami

The phone on the dashboard buzzed incessantly, a digital metronome keeping time with Clara’s worsening contractions. Arthur remained frozen, his gaze locked on the glowing glass screen that now held absolute dominion over their lives. Every ding of a new notification felt like a hammer blow against his crumbling sanity.

“Look at that,” Marcus murmured, leaning back against the driver’s headrest with an unsettling smirk. “The algorithm loves a good roadside tragedy. Shares are climbing by the thousands every minute.”

Clara writhed in the folding chair, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the metal frame. “Dad, I can’t... I can’t breathe,” she gasped, a fresh wave of pain tearing through her body.

Arthur dropped to his knees in the dry grass, ignoring the dirt staining his light blue button-down shirt. He reached out, grabbing Clara’s trembling hand. “Hold on, sweetheart. People are watching. They’re going to help us.”

Marcus tapped the steering wheel rhythmically. “They’re not just watching, Arthur. They’re debating. Half the comments say we’re running a sick scam. The other half are arguing about whether healthcare should be free. Nobody is actually sending money yet, but the engagement metrics are poetry.”

“You monster!” Arthur yelled, the restraint finally snapping in his voice. “She is bleeding! Time is running out!”

Marcus’s smile vanished, replaced by a cold, hardened glare. He rolled the truck window up an inch, shutting out the heat and the reality of Clara’s suffering. “Save the righteous fury for the comment section. I didn’t invent this game; I just know how to win it. If you want a ride, you need fifty thousand shares in ten minutes, or the deal is off.”

Clara let out a blood-curdling scream that echoed across the empty field, her back arching violently in the chair. Arthur turned back to the dashboard camera, his pride entirely shattered.

“Please,” Arthur sobbed, pressing his forehead against the passenger side window of the red truck. “Just drive. I’ll give you everything I own. My house, my car, just take her!”

“Houses don’t go viral, Arthur,” Marcus replied, picking up his phone to read the latest comment. “Viral clout does. And right now, a mysterious user just dropped a massive super-chat.”
