Chapter 1 - The Broken Tollbooth

Arthur stood beside the faded green folding chair where his daughter Clara clutched her swollen abdomen, her breaths coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The sun beat down mercilessly on the dusty field, framing the weathered wooden fence that separated them from any hope of civilization. A red pickup truck idled nearby, its engine a low, rhythmic growl that mocked their desperation. Arthur’s white hair clung to his sweat-slicked forehead as he locked eyes with the driver.

“Please take my granddaughter to the hospital,” Arthur pleaded, his voice cracking with a raw, desperate urgency.

Inside the cab, the driver, a man named Marcus with cold, calculating eyes behind polarized sunglasses, didn't move an inch. He shifted the truck into neutral, revving the engine just enough to drown out Clara’s soft, agonizing moan.

“It will cost $500,” Marcus replied flatly, his tone devoid of any human empathy.

Arthur’s heart plummeted into his stomach. He patted his empty pockets, finding only lint and a crumpled grocery receipt. “I don’t have enough money,” Arthur whispered, the first tear cutting a clean path through the dust on his cheek.

Marcus leaned his arm out of the rolled-down window, adjusting his posture with chilling casualness. “Don’t worry. Tell the viewers to like, follow, and share this video, and I’ll take her to the hospital.”

Clara cried out, her fingers digging deep into the fabric of her light blue T-shirt as another contraction wracked her fragile frame. Arthur looked past Marcus, directly into the glowing lens of the hidden smartphone mounted on the truck's dashboard, realizing his daughter's life was now live-streaming to the digital void. With his voice trembling and tears streaming down his face, Arthur stared straight at the camera.

“Please like, follow, and share,” Arthur begged, his hands clasped together in a pathetic gesture of absolute submission. “Please help my granddaughter.”

Marcus smiled faintly, glancing down at his phone screen where the viewer count suddenly spiked, jumping from twelve to twelve thousand in a matter of seconds.

“We’re gaining momentum, old man,” Marcus said, keeping the truck door firmly locked. “Let’s see if the internet cares enough to save her.”
