Chapter 13 - The Roof of No Return

The emergency stairwell door burst open with a deafening crash as Arthur half-carried Clara up the concrete steps toward the roof access door. Behind them, the faint sound of heavy boots echoing up the stairwell confirmed Miller’s worst fears—Thorne’s tactical team had breached the third floor just seconds after they fled the room.

“Keep moving, Clara! Just a few more steps!” Arthur panted, his chest burning as he hoisted his daughter’s weight upward.

They slammed through the heavy metal door, tumbling out onto the flat rooftop of the hospital just as a torrential downpour slammed into them. The cold rain instantly soaked through Arthur’s light blue button-down shirt, plastering his white hair to his forehead. Lightning split the dark sky overhead, illuminating the vast, empty expanse of the city skyline in the distance.

Detective Miller was already waiting by the helipad maintenance shed, holding a heavy tactical submachine gun drawn and ready.

“The elevators are compromised!” Miller yelled over the deafening roar of the storm and thunder. “They bypassed the stairwell lock using an override code!”

Clara stumbled, collapsing against a large ventilation unit, gasping for breath. “Dad, I can’t go any further. My legs... they won’t hold me.”

Arthur knelt beside her, pulling her hood tighter around her head. “You have to, sweetheart. We’re going to make it out of this.”

Suddenly, the heavy rooftop access door was kicked completely off its hinges with a violent metallic screech. Julian Thorne stepped out into the pouring rain, flanked by two masked security contractors holding assault rifles with tactical laser sights. Julian wasn't wearing a coat; his expensive suit was already ruined, yet he walked with the arrogant stride of a man who owned the world.

“End of the line, Arthur,” Julian shouted, the rain plastering his dark hair across his forehead. “Drop the drive, and maybe—just maybe—I’ll let you and your delusional daughter walk away from this roof alive.”

Miller stepped in front of Arthur and Clara, leveling her weapon directly at Julian’s chest. “Stay back, Thorne! You’re federal property now!”

Julian let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the thunder. “Federal property? Detective, look at your phone. Check the national news feed right this second.”

Arthur instinctively pulled out his phone, his wet fingers fumbling with the screen. He unlocked it just as a breaking news banner flashed across every major news network in the country: “FEDERAL RESERVE SYSTEM COLLAPSES: CRYPTO-HEIST TRACED TO CORRUPT LAW ENFORCEMENT AND PRIVATE MERCENARY SYNDICATE.”

“Your own department is burning down around you, Miller,” Julian smiled coldly, taking another step forward. “And you’re standing in the blast radius.”
