Chapter 8: Caught in the Archive

Elena’s heart slammed against her ribs as Marcus’s footsteps drew closer to the open door of the storage closet. Panic flared through her veins, telling her to run, but the narrow layout of the room left her with no escape route except past the doorway where Marcus was now standing.
The tall, impeccably dressed man in a light grey tweed blazer and dark trousers stopped dead in his tracks as he peered into the dim storage room. His casual, relaxed demeanor vanished in an instant, replaced by a cold, calculating stare that made him look chillingly like Julian, though lacking his cousin's austere dignity. Marcus’s eyes darted from Elena kneeling on the floor to the open strongbox and the scattered papers at her knees.
""Well, well,"" Marcus said softly, his voice smooth as silk yet laced with quiet menace. He did not raise his voice or sound surprised; rather, he sounded like a hunter who had just found a deer cornered in a thicket. ""It seems the diligent maid has a habit of exploring areas way above her pay grade.""
Elena slowly rose to her feet, keeping her hands visible and away from her pockets to show she was no threat. Her breathing was shallow, but she forced her voice to remain steady. ""I was cleaning the guest suite, Mr. Marcus. The connecting door was open. I heard a noise and came to check.""
""A likely story,"" Marcus replied, taking a slow, deliberate step into the cramped room. He shoved his hands into his trouser pockets, his dark eyes—so similar in shade to Clara's, yet infinitely sharper—scanning the floor. ""You have a remarkable talent for being in the wrong place at the very worst times, Elena. First the service closet, now my late uncle's private archive.""
""Your uncle's archive?"" Elena challenged quietly, her courage surprising even herself. ""Is that what this is? Or is this where the Vance family hides its dirty laundry?""
Marcus’s jaw tightened slightly, a micro-expression of annoyance breaking through his polished exterior. He stepped closer, towering over her in the confined space. ""You play a dangerous game of blind ambition, girl. People like you—coming from nothing, trying to carve out a living in houses where you don't belong—often forget that stepping into a shark tank without armor usually ends in disaster.""
""I didn't ask to be brought into this,"" Elena said, holding her ground and looking straight into his eyes. ""Someone put that bag in my service closet. Someone cloned my keycard. And looking at this room... I'd say whoever framed me didn't just want a thief caught; they wanted a distraction.""
Marcus let out a low, humorless chuckle. ""A distraction? My dear Elena, you give yourself far too much credit. You aren't a master tactician; you're just a loose end that needs to be tied up neatly before Julian digs any deeper into things he shouldn't be investigating.""
Before Elena could process the chilling implication of his words, a sharp voice cut through the quiet corridor behind them.

""Marcus. What are you doing in the east wing archive?""
Julian stood in the doorway of the guest suite, his navy blue suit jacket draped over his arm, his shirt sleeves rolled up, and his expression as dark as a gathering storm. His eyes flicked from Marcus to Elena, taking in the open strongbox, the scattered papers, and the palpable tension hanging heavy in the air between them.
