Chapter 3: Fractured Loyalties

The tension in the foyer thickened to an almost unbearable degree as Julian weighed the evidence in his hand. The diamond necklace felt cold against his palm, a heavy talisman of wealth that had brought nothing but suspicion and discord into their household. He carefully placed the necklace back into the brown leather travel bag and zipped it shut, cutting off the blinding sparkle of the stones.

""We are not calling the police,"" Julian announced, his voice carrying an authority that brooked no immediate argument.

Clara spun around, her eyes widening in disbelief, her large gold hoops swinging wildly. ""Not calling the police? Julian, are you out of your mind? She stole a family heirloom worth more than most people earn in a lifetime! It was in her designated storage area, packed neatly inside a bag that belongs to her department!""

""It was found in a common service area accessible to half a dozen staff members, catering crews, and contractors who have been in and out of this estate all week for your charity gala setup,"" Julian replied coolly, his eyes locking onto his wife's. ""Involving the authorities right now means a public scandal. The press would have a field day with the Vance family being robbed from within. I prefer to handle matters internally first.""

Elena let out a microscopic sigh of relief, though her heart was still hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She knew that staying in this house under suspicion was dangerous, but being handed over to the police would mean certain destruction for someone with her background and lack of financial resources.

Grandmother Eleanor nodded slowly in agreement with her grandson. ""Julian is right, Clara. Let us keep our dignity intact. However,"" Eleanor turned her aging, sharp eyes toward Elena, ""that does not mean you are cleared of suspicion, child. You will remain on the estate grounds until we find out how that bag got into your workspace. You are confined to the staff quarters in the carriage house effective immediately.""

""Grandmother, that's practically a promotion to house arrest,"" Clara protested, crossing her arms over her black dress. ""She should be locked in the cellar or thrown out into the street!""

""She is an employee until proven guilty in my eyes, Clara, not a criminal awaiting trial in a medieval dungeon,"" Eleanor countered, her voice carrying the unyielding steel of a matriarch who had built this family’s fortune alongside her late husband. ""Higgins will escort her to the carriage house. Julian, bring the bag to my study. We need to look at the security logs.""

Elena kept her gaze lowered to the marble floor, not daring to meet anyone's eyes as the household order shifted around her. The walk across the courtyard to the carriage house was cold, the evening wind biting at her skin and making her grey uniform feel terribly thin. Mrs. Higgins was waiting by the heavy wooden doors, her face etched with deep sorrow and quiet solidarity. The older woman didn't ask questions; she simply opened the door and ushered Elena inside, locking it firmly behind them.
