Chapter 10: The Unraveling Web

Down in the carriage house, Elena paced the small wooden floorboards, her hands wringing the fabric of her grey uniform skirt. The confrontation she had just witnessed confirmed her worst fears: the theft of the diamond necklace was not an isolated crime committed by an opportunistic servant, but a calculated chess move in a high-stakes financial war within the Vance family itself.

Mrs. Higgins sat quietly by the small kitchenette table, brewing a cup of chamomile tea. She watched the younger woman pace with a calm, steady gaze that had weathered decades of aristocratic dramas.

""He'll see through Marcus,"" Higgins said softly, breaking the rhythm of Elena's pacing. ""Julian isn't a fool. He loved his uncle Lorenzo, and he knows how ruthless Marcus can be when it comes to the family trust.""

""If Marcus is desperate enough to frame me, what stops him from doing worse to Julian?"" Elena stopped pacing, her dark eyes wide with genuine alarm. ""Mr. Vance walked right into that trap alone. I should have stayed. I should have told him about the appraisal document.""

""If you had stayed, Marcus would have found a way to implicate you further,"" Higgins countered reasonably, sliding a steaming mug of tea across the table. ""Julian needed to see his cousin in that room by himself. He needed to witness the lie firsthand. Trust the process, Elena. Men like Julian Vance move slowly, but when they strike, they dismantle empires.""

Meanwhile, in the east wing archive, the standoff between the two cousins had reached a critical juncture. Julian stood immovable in the doorway, blocking any exit, while Marcus tried to maintain a veneer of superior indifference.

""You're spinning a bizarre conspiracy theory, Julian,"" Marcus said, letting out a sharp, dry laugh that sounded forced even to his own ears. ""Because a disgruntled maid gets caught with stolen family jewelry, you're suddenly turning on your own blood? Aunt Clara must be thrilled to know her husband values a servant over his own family.""

""Clara has her own flaws, and we will address them in due time,"" Julian replied coldly, stepping closer to Marcus. ""But right now, we are talking about Lorenzo’s estate portfolio. The missing diamond necklace wasn't just sitting in a safe; it was collateral for an unauthorized loan you took out against the family trust six months before Uncle Lorenzo died abroad. When the auditors started sniffing around last month, you needed it back—or you needed it reported stolen so you could collect the insurance payout before the annual audit next week.""

Marcus’s face drained of color. The smooth, cultured banker persona evaporated entirely, replaced by the cornered look of a man whose house of cards had finally collapsed.

""You can't prove any of that,"" Marcus hissed, his voice dropping an octave as he lunged forward, grabbing Julian by the lapels of his shirt. ""You have no paper trail! Uncle Lorenzo signed over power of attorney to me before he left on that trip!""

Julian didn't flinch. He slowly reached up, his strong fingers wrapping around Marcus’s wrists with an iron grip, and peeled his cousin's hands away from his shirt with casual, terrifying ease.

""I have the digital backup of Lorenzo’s private server, Marcus,"" Julian said softly, his breath warm against his cousin's ear. ""The one you thought you deleted. The police won't just see a stolen necklace; they'll see a pattern of embezzlement that spans three continents.""
