Chapter 6: Whispers in the Gallery

The morning sun filtered weakly through the tall windows of the Vance estate, casting long, geometric shadows across the polished hardwood floors of the second-floor portrait gallery. Elena walked down the corridor with a loaded cleaning cart, her knuckles white as she gripped the handle. Every sound—the distant chiming of the grandfather clock, the rustle of ivy against the glass panes, the faint murmur of voices from the parlor downstairs—seemed amplified, loaded with hidden threat.

She had slept barely two hours. The conversation with Julian the night before had left her with more questions than answers, and the terrifying knowledge that someone in the mansion was orchestrating her ruin made every shadow look like a trap. Yet, Mrs. Higgins had insisted she maintain her routine. *To show fear is to invite the predator closer,* the older woman had advised over breakfast.

As Elena approached the main landing near the grand staircase, she heard the distinct, sharp click of high heels pacing back and forth across the Persian rug. Clara Vance’s voice drifted up, laced with aristocratic annoyance and a thinly veiled edge of panic.

""...I don't care what the security logs say, Julian! The girl had it in her space! How much more proof do you need before you throw her out on the street like the common thief she is?"" Clara demanded, her voice echoing up the stairwell.

Julian’s voice responded, low, calm, and maddeningly composed. ""Clara, a thorough investigation means checking every angle. If we rush to judgment and the police find out someone inside the family planted it, the scandal will destroy our corporate partnerships faster than a burglary ever could. Have some patience.""

""Patience?"" Clara scoffed bitterly. ""You're acting as if you care more about her job security than my peace of mind! That necklace was a gift from your mother on our fifth anniversary. It holds sentimental value, or at least it used to, before you started treating this entire disaster like a corporate merger negotiation!""

Elena paused by a large oil painting of the Vance patriarch, holding her breath. The hostility between Julian and Clara was palpable, a volatile marriage built on shifting sands of wealth, status, and unspoken resentments. If Clara was so frantic to pin the crime on Elena, was it simply out of blind anger, or was there something else—something Clara was desperately trying to hide from her husband?

Soft footsteps approached from behind, and Elena instinctively stepped to the side, pulling her cleaning cart closer to the wall. It was Mrs. Higgins, carrying a silver tray with a fresh cup of black coffee for Grandmother Eleanor. The older housekeeper gave Elena a brief, warning look, her eyes darting toward the stairs to signal that the coast was not entirely clear.

""Keep your head down, child,"" Higgins murmured under her breath as she passed. ""Clara is looking for a fight today. She's been on the phone with her lawyer all morning.""

Elena nodded silently, watching Higgins glide down the hallway toward Eleanor’s private study. She turned back to her cart, picking up a microfiber cloth and a bottle of lemon-scented polish to begin work on the oak wainscoting. But as she rubbed the cloth against the dark wood, her mind raced back to the leather travel bag. Lorenzo Vance’s old bag. An uncle who had passed away under somewhat mysterious circumstances three years ago—a sudden heart attack while traveling abroad, though the family rumor mill had always whispered about financial irregularities in his private accounts.

If Lorenzo’s old belongings were still locked away in the estate attic, who had access to them? Only family members and the head of maintenance possessed the master keys to the restricted storage zones. Elena realized with a cold shiver that she was wading into waters far deeper than a simple workplace theft. She was stumbling into the dark, dusty secrets of the Vance dynasty itself.
