Chapter 5: An Unlikely Visitor

Julian stepped into the carriage house without waiting for an invitation, his tall frame making the cozy room feel instantly smaller. He glanced briefly at Mrs. Higgins, who immediately nodded and discreetly stepped back into the kitchenette, leaving the two of them alone.

Elena stood up from the bed, her body instinctively tensing as she faced him. The red mark on her cheek was still faintly visible under the warm incandescent lighting of the room. Julian noticed it, and a flicker of something resembling discomfort crossed his features before he masked it behind his usual professional armor.

""Sit down, Elena,"" Julian said quietly, his voice lacking the sharp authority it had held in the foyer.

Elena hesitated for a moment before sitting back down on the edge of the mattress. Julian remained standing, resting one hand on the back of the wooden chair Higgins had just vacated. He looked down at her for a long, agonizing moment, as if trying to decipher a complex code written across her face.

""My wife wants you fired and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,"" Julian began, getting straight to the point without any pleasantries. ""She believes your quiet demeanor is just a mask for a calculating thief. And I must admit, the circumstantial evidence points directly at you. The bag was yours, or at least stored in your assigned sector.""

""It was not my bag, Mr. Vance,"" Elena said, her voice steady now, fueled by a sudden surge of defensive pride. ""I have one suitcase, and it is a cheap canvas duffel bag from a department store. That leather travel bag is expensive. It's vintage Italian leather with brass hardware. I could never afford something like that in a lifetime of working here.""

Julian listened intently, his gaze never leaving hers. He reached into the leather portfolio he had tucked under his arm and pulled out a single glossy photograph, placing it face-up on the small wooden table between them. It was a close-up image of the leather bag's interior tag, showing a faded gold foil logo.

""Do you recognize that brand?"" Julian asked.

Elena leaned forward, squinting at the photograph. The logo was partially worn away, but distinct enough: a stylized crown above the initials *L.V.* Her breath hitched slightly.

""L and V,"" Elena murmured, looking up at him with sudden confusion. ""Your initials? No... wait.""

""Not mine,"" Julian said grimly. ""Lorenzo Vance. My uncle. He passed away three years ago, and his personal effects were packed away in the estate’s east wing attic. That bag hasn't been touched since his estate was inventoried.""

The pieces of the puzzle began to shift in Elena's mind, creating an image far more sinister than a simple case of opportunistic theft. ""If the bag has been in the attic for three years, how did it end up in my service closet with a multi-million-dollar necklace inside it?""

""Precisely the question I asked myself,"" Julian replied, pulling out another piece of paper—a printout of the estate’s digital security logs for the past forty-eight hours. ""The service closet on the second floor requires a digital keycard to unlock after ten o'clock at night. Your keycard was logged entering that hallway at 11:42 PM last night.""

Elena stood up abruptly, her chair scraping loudly against the wooden floorboards. ""That's impossible! I gave my keycard to Higgins on Tuesday because the magnetic strip was glitching, and she had maintenance issue me a temporary replacement on Wednesday morning. I was asleep in my room all night!""

Julian looked at her for a long moment, studying the absolute conviction in her posture and the genuine outrage in her eyes. He slowly folded the security log paper and slipped it back into his portfolio.

""Higgins confirmed the keycard swap,"" Julian admitted quietly. ""Which means someone accessed the system using a cloned card or took yours while you were working. Someone in this house is actively framing you, Elena. And right now, you are the only person who doesn't realize how dangerous that game really is.""
